Chelsea agree deal to sign Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Crystal Palace to sign defender Maxence Lacroix, with the France international set to join the Blues on a long-term contract.

The two Premier League clubs have negotiated a deal at ownership level, with an agreement now in place for the centre-back’s move to Stamford Bridge.

Lacroix is expected to complete his medical within the next 24 hours before finalising his transfer, with his new contract understood to run until 2032.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, with Chelsea moving quickly to secure the services of one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders.

The 26-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign with Palace last season, playing a key role as Oliver Glasner’s side lifted the UEFA Conference League, securing the first major European trophy in the club’s history.

Lacroix made 55 appearances across all competitions and also helped Palace claim victory in the Community Shield against Liverpool, while the Eagles continued their strong form in the Premier League.

His performances also earned him international recognition, with the defender included in France’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. Lacroix featured three times during the tournament, starting against Norway and England in the third-place play-off as Les Bleus finished fourth.

Palace signed Lacroix from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in August 2024 for an initial £15.5 million fee, with a further £2.6m available in potential add-ons.

Since arriving in England, he has established himself as one of the division’s most reliable central defenders, attracting interest from several clubs before Chelsea secured an agreement.

Why Chelsea wanted Lacroix

Chelsea identified Lacroix as a priority target after two standout seasons in English football, with his defensive statistics highlighting his consistency at the highest level.

During the 2025-26 Premier League season, Lacroix was the only player to record at least 50 tackles, 200 duels won and 250 clearances, finishing the campaign with 60 tackles, 204 duels won and 252 clearances.

Standing at 6ft 4in, the defender combines physical strength with impressive speed and recovery ability. Since joining Palace, he has ranked among the fastest centre-backs in the Premier League, reaching a top speed of 35.81km/h (22.3mph).

That pace has helped Lacroix excel in one-on-one defensive situations. Over the last two Premier League campaigns, he recorded the best success rate among players who contested at least 50 individual defensive duels, winning possession back 50.5% of the time.

The Frenchman’s versatility is another factor behind Chelsea’s interest. Comfortable operating in either a back four or a back three, Lacroix spent two seasons in Glasner’s three-man defensive system at Palace but has also shown he can adapt to a more traditional setup.

That flexibility could prove valuable for Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, who has used both defensive structures throughout his managerial career.

Lacroix’s arrival will provide further competition and quality in Chelsea’s defensive options as the club continue to build their squad under Alonso.
