Chelsea complete signing of Pep Chavarria from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano

Chavarria arrives after four years at Rayo, where he established himself as a dependable top-flight defender and played a key role in the club’s recent success.

The 28-year-old will link up with his new team-mates at Cobham as Chelsea continue preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.

Speaking after completing his move, Chavarria said: “I’m so excited to get started. This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success.

“There are a lot of people who have helped me get to this moment and I have to thank my family. They have always supported me and today is only possible because of them.”

From the Spanish lower leagues to Chelsea

Born in Figueres, Catalonia, he began his career with hometown club UE Figueres in Spain’s fourth tier. He made his senior debut at the age of 18 against CF Peralada before developing into an attack-minded left-back during his time with the club.

In 2018, he moved to third-tier UE Olot and quickly established himself as a regular starter. He made 52 appearances for the club and caught the attention of Real Zaragoza, earning a move to the Spanish second tier in August 2020.

Chavarria made his professional debut the following month, starting in a 2-2 draw with Las Palmas. He spent two seasons with Zaragoza before taking another significant step in his career.

In August 2022, he joined Rayo Vallecano and finally reached La Liga at the age of 24.

Establishing himself at Rayo Vallecano

Chavarria quickly adapted to life in Spain’s top flight and went on to become a mainstay of the Rayo side.

Across four seasons at the club, he made 125 appearances and developed a reputation for his defensive aggression, physicality and ability to contribute from the left side.

Rayo have enjoyed an impressive period during Chavarria’s time at Vallecas, recording back-to-back eighth-place finishes in La Liga over the past two seasons.

Their progress also extended into European competition last term, with Rayo reaching the UEFA Conference League final. Chavarria started the final against Crystal Palace, although Rayo were narrowly beaten 1-0.

He made 44 appearances in all competitions during the campaign, scoring once and registering three assists. In La Liga, he created 27 chances from open play.

One of his standout performances came against Real Madrid at Vallecas in November, when Rayo held the Spanish giants to a goalless draw.

That match also brought Chavarria up against Xabi Alonso, who was in charge of Real Madrid at the time and would later become Chelsea head coach.

A new option for Xabi Alonso

Chavarria’s arrival gives Alonso additional depth at left-back and could also provide the Chelsea boss with another option for the wing-back system that proved successful during his time at Bayer Leverkusen.

The Spaniard’s arrival follows the departure of Marc Cucurella, who joined Real Madrid in June, while Chelsea also strengthened on the opposite flank with the signing of right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta in July.

Chavarria’s development at Rayo is particularly notable given the unconventional route he took to the highest level.

Rather than progressing through one of Spain’s major academies or making an early breakthrough in La Liga, he worked his way through the lower divisions before establishing himself in the top flight.

His move to Rayo in 2022 was initially completed for less than £2m, with the defender going on to become one of the club’s most important players.

Chelsea overcome difficult negotiations

Rayo were initially reluctant to sell the defender and insisted that his release clause, which had risen to £42.4m, would need to be met.

The two clubs eventually reached an agreement believed to be worth around £16.3m, with a further £1.7m available in add-ons.

Rayo’s strong financial position allowed them to resist offers for Chavarria, while the player still had four years remaining on his contract.

The Spanish club also believed his underlying statistics placed him at a similar level to Cucurella, helping explain their initial stance on his valuation.

Chavarria now begins the next chapter of his career in west London, having gone from Spanish football’s lower leagues to one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

His first challenge will be adapting to the demands of Chelsea and competing for a place in Alonso’s squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
