Chelsea Flower Show: Winners, Royals and Roses
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show once again put on a fantastic display of cutting-edge garden design, inspired by sustainability, wellbeing, and climate resilience.
Widely regarded as the most prestigious flower show in the world, it once again attracted huge crowds, including King Charles III, Sir David Beckham, and Joanna Lumley.
Among this year’s displays, we witnessed Royal-themed gardens, rare plant displays, and new rose varieties unveiled especially for this year’s show.
Who won ‘Garden of the year’
Sarah Eberle’s entry will now head nearly 200 miles north to South Yorkshire after being crowned ‘Garden of the Year.’
Eberle’s ‘On The Edge’ garden, headlined by a huge wooden figure of Greek Earth goddess Gaia, was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society event’s top award and will now make the journey to its permanent home on Sheffield’s Park Hill estate.
Eberle’s is one of the most recognisable designers in the world, with her amassing over 20 gold medals throughout the years at RHS shows, with ‘On The Edge’ being a collaboration with the Campaign to Protect Rural England.
“I just think it’s the best place for her to go,” said Eberle.
“Fringe landscapes are the first touch of nature that people who live in towns and cities have, and they’re under-protected. I cannot wait to see it in situ.
“She’s been carved from a sequoia tree that’s supposedly fallen on this site.
“Her hip turns to stone, forms an arch over the garden which then circles round to form this little quiet area at the back.”
How was Sir David Beckham involved?
A rose named after Sir David Beckham was unveiled on the first day of the Chelsea Flower Show.
It was created by Shropshire-based David Austin Roses at the request of Sir David’s daughter, Harper, when he celebrated his 50th birthday last year.
The company said she wanted the shrub rose to be “something enduring,” which she imagined would “grow alongside their family”.
The Sir David Beckham Rose formed part of this year’s David Austin’s Cotswold Garden display, which won a gold award at the show.
Sir David said: “Gardening brings people together across generations and gives so much pleasure.
“To be part of something that celebrates that, and the heritage of the English rose, feels very meaningful to me.”
