How does the Nations Championship work?
The Nations Championship has brought a new competitive element to the traditional summer tours and autumn internationals. England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy form the Northern Hemisphere group, while New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Argentina are joined by Japan and Fiji in the Southern Hemisphere group.
Each northern nation faces all six southern opponents across the July and November windows, with the opening three rounds taking place during the summer before the southern sides travel north for rounds four to six. England return to Allianz Stadium having taken two victories from their opening three Nations Championship matches. Steve Borthwick’s side were beaten 45-21 by South Africa at Ellis Park before responding emphatically with a 73-8 victory against Fiji and then completing their July programme with a 31-24 win away to Argentina.
Their home programme begins against Australia on Sunday 8th November at 15:10, before Japan arrive at Twickenham on Saturday 14th November for a 16:40 kick-off. The final round brings one of international rugby’s great fixtures as England host New Zealand on Saturday 21st November at 14:10.
The visit of the All Blacks provides a particularly eye-catching conclusion to the group phase, but England will have plenty to negotiate before then.
