Chelsea Sack Liam Rosenior After Just 106 Days In Charge

Chelsea have brought an abrupt end to the tenure of Liam Rosenior, sacking the head coach after less than four months in charge at Stamford Bridge.
The decision closes one of the shortest managerial spells in the club’s recent history, despite Rosenior having signed a five-and-a-half-year deal upon his arrival from RC Strasbourg in January.
Rosenior’s departure follows a damaging run of results that ultimately left the club with little choice. Across all competitions, he managed 11 wins in 23 matches, but form in the Premier League proved particularly concerning. A 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion marked Chelsea’s fifth consecutive league loss without scoring, their worst goal drought since 1912. The result also saw the Blues slip to seventh in the table, seven points adrift of the UEFA Champions League qualification places.
In the immediate aftermath of the Brighton defeat, Rosenior labelled his side’s performance “indefensible” and “unacceptable,” comments that came amid audible frustration from travelling supporters. It proved to be a defining moment, with the club’s hierarchy acting swiftly in response to both results and performances that had fallen below expectations.
A club statement acknowledged Rosenior’s professionalism during his short spell but made clear the reasoning behind the decision, citing the need to improve with key fixtures still to play. Chelsea’s form had deteriorated sharply, with just one win from their last nine league matches and a five-game losing streak, their longest in the top flight since 1993. Defensive issues also persisted, with no clean sheet in 12 consecutive league games and a growing vulnerability from set-pieces, which had been taking advantage of multiple times by opposing teams.
Despite these struggles, there were some positives during Rosenior’s tenure. He guided Chelsea to the FA Cup semi-finals, albeit with victories over lower-league opposition. However, those cup runs were not enough to offset the club’s league form, which had placed their European ambitions under serious threat.
Attention now turns to the future, with several candidates already linked to the vacancy. Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, and Edin Terzić are all understood to be under consideration as Chelsea weigh up their next move. The club has indicated that it will take time to reflect before making a permanent appointment, with stability and long-term planning now a priority.
In the meantime, interim responsibility has been handed to Calum McFarlane. The 40-year-old, who had been serving as Rosenior’s assistant, steps into the role having already experienced a brief spell in caretaker charge earlier this season following the departure of Enzo Maresca.
McFarlane’s coaching journey has taken him from non-league football with Croydon to academy roles at Manchester City and Southampton, before joining Chelsea last year. He impressed within the club’s youth setup, notably leading the Under-19s to an unbeaten run in the UEFA Youth League group stage, securing victories against some of Europe’s elite academies.
He now faces a significant test at senior level, with his first match in interim charge set to come at Wembley against Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-finals.
The Englishman will be opposite Daniel Farke who will lead his Leeds side out at the weekend. The German has his side in red hot form and seemingly now out of the relegation battle after reaching the magic 40 points following a draw at AFC Bournemouth mid-week.
