Chelsea sign Danny Welbeck and Valentin Barco as Xabi Alonso continues to rebuild squad

The Blues have added experience and youth to their ranks, with Welbeck arriving from Brighton on a two-year contract, while Barco has joined from Strasbourg on a seven-year-deal.

Welbeck, 35, arrives at Stamford Bridge after enjoying one of the most productive seasons of his career with Brighton, scoring a career-best 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances last term. Only three English players found the net more times in the division.

The former Manchester United and Arsenal striker becomes Chelsea’s third signing of the summer following the arrival of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.

Speaking after completing his move, Welbeck admitted he was proud to have earned the opportunity to represent Chelsea.

“When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride,” said Welbeck.

“I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.

“I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”

Welbeck’s arrival marks a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment approach under their current ownership, with the club having largely focused on signing younger players since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took control in 2022.

The experienced forward will add competition to an attacking group that already included Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson.

A product of Manchester United’s academy, Welbeck made his senior debut at Old Trafford before moving to Arsenal in a £16m deal in 2014. He spent five years with the Gunners, winning the FA Cup, before spells at Watford and Brighton followed.

The striker has scored 16 goals in 42 appearances for England, although his last international appearance came in 2018.

Chelsea have also strengthened their midfield options with the signing on Valentin Barco from Strasbourg.

The 21-year-old has signed a long-term seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge and becomes the club’s sixth arrival of the summer, following Welbeck, Rogers, Emegha, Maxence Lacroix and Palestra.

Barco will join up with Chelsea’s squad during their pre-season preparations, with the Blues set to face Juventus in Hong Kong on 5^th August.

The midfielder began his career at Boca Juniors before moving to Brighton in 2024 for a reported £7.9m fee. After making limited appearances on the south coast, Barco enjoyed a successful loan spell at Strasbourg before making his move to France permanent.

His performances have now earned him a switch to Chelsea, with the move representing another deal between clubs owned by Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

Barco also has international experience with Argentina, making one appearance during the 2026 World Cup as they reached the final before losing to Spain. He was also involved in the aftermath of Argentina’s semi-final victory over England, when Jude Bellingham struck him during the post-match celebrations.
