Teenage Sensation Dowman Takes His Opportunity at Portman Road

Arteta made nine changes from the side that had beaten Sunderland in the Premier League, but Arsenal needed only seven minutes to take control of the tie.

Dowman won possession before driving towards the Ipswich penalty area and beating his defender to finish beyond Christian Walton. Madueke doubled the advantage in the 16th minute, leaving the hosts facing a significant task before the midway point of the first half.

Ipswich did offer a response as the half developed, but Arsenal carried their two-goal advantage into the interval before quickly extending it after the restart. Dowman grabbed his second in the 47th minute, calmly finishing to make it 3-0 and put Arteta’s side firmly in control.

Merino then added Arsenal’s fourth before the hour mark, finding the net via the post to complete an impressive attacking display from the visitors. Mehmeti pulled one back four minutes later and Akpom scored in stoppage time, but neither goal threatened Arsenal’s place in the next round.

Dowman’s performance was the major talking point from the evening, with the academy graduate making the most of his first appearance of the season.

Speaking after the game, Arteta said of the 16-year-old: “He is 16, we don’t really see that in the Premier League. In this environment we want to develop him and we need to look after him.”

The Arsenal boss was equally impressed by the youngster’s opening goal, describing Dowman as “unpredictable” and “so fluid, so nice to watch”.

The teenager was not the only young player given an opportunity. Marli Salmon started alongside Gabriel Magalhães in central defence, while Arsenal finished the evening with several academy products on the pitch as Arteta used the competition to rotate his squad without compromising on the result.
