Jordan Henderson joins Chelsea on two-year deal after Brentford exit

The experienced England midfielder, 36, arrives at Stamford Bridge having made 32 Premier League appearances for Brentford during the 2025-26 campaign, following his arrival from Ajax last summer.

Henderson brings a wealth of experience to Xabi Alonso’s squad, having enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Liverpool, where he captained the club to the Premier League title in 2019-20.

During his time at Anfield, Henderson also lifted the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup twice, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, establishing himself as the Reds’ most decorated captain.

After leaving Liverpool in 2023, Henderson joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq before moving to Ajax in January 2024. He then returned to English football with Brentford ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Speaking after completing his move to Chelsea, Henderson said the opportunity to work with Alonso was a key factor in his decision.

“Given the size of the club, the manager [Xabi Alonso] who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” said Henderson.

“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

Henderson began his career at Sunderland, coming through the club’s academy before making his Premier League debut as a substitute in a 5-0 defeat against Chelsea on 1^st November 2008.

He went on to earn the first of his 91 England caps in 2010 and has represented the Three Lions at seven major tournaments, including the Euro 2020 final against Italy, where England suffered defeat on penalties.

This summer, Henderson made history by becoming the first Englishman to feature at four separate World Cups when he came off the bench during England’s 2-0 win over Panama.

However, that proved to be his only appearance at the tournament after he suffered a freak broken arm following the victory over Mexico. Henderson fell awkwardly while attempting to jump over advertising hoardings after the last-16 tie, despite not featuring in the match. He had also picked up a booking earlier in the game after voicing his frustration at an officials’ decision while warming up.

Chelsea are hoping Henderson’s leadership and experience can help transform a side that finished 10th in the Premier League last season, one place and one point behind Brentford, while missing out on European qualification.

The midfielder becomes the 10th new arrival of a busy summer transfer window for Alonso, with the Chelsea boss overseeing a major rebuild since taking charge.

The Blues completed a club-record £117m deal for England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, while England striker Danny Welbeck joined from Brighton in a reported £5m transfer. Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco has also arrived.

Chelsea have strengthened across the squad, with defender Maxence Lacroix joining from Crystal Palace for £52m, right-back Marco Palestra moving from Atalanta for £42m and winger Geovany Quenda arriving from Sporting for £40m.

The club have also added striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, 18-year-old left-back Denner from Corinthians and teenage forward Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty.

Meanwhile, defender Trevoh Chalobah has left Stamford Bridge after Como agreed a deal worth more than £30m to sign the academy graduate.
