Liverpool agree £30m deal to sell Curtis Jones to Inter Milan
The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his Liverpool contract and is now set to leave the club after 16 years, having joined the Reds’ academy at the age of nine.
The agreement was reached late on Wednesday night, with Jones given permission to travel ahead of the medical.
Jones made his Liverpool first-team debut during the 2018-19 season and went on to make 228 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals.
He won two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, the FA Cup and the Club World Cup during his time at Anfield, while also finishing as a Champions League runner-up in 2022.
Jones will become the third England international to join Inter this summer, following John Stones and Djed Spence.
Liverpool midfield options after Curtis Jones exit
Jones’ departure will leave Liverpool with another decision to make over their midfield options ahead of the new season.
He made 49 appearances under former head coach Arne Slot last season, including 34 in the Premier League.
Jones shared midfield duties with Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch, while he was also used as a makeshift right-back on several occasions.
New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola is expected to use Florian Wirtz in his preferred No. 10 role in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
That would leave Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Gravenberch competing for the two midfield positions in front of the defence.
Iraola can also call upon Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni, with the latter having impressed during pre-season.
Liverpool could still reinvest the £30m received for Jones before the transfer window closes, although there has been no indication that the club are certain to sign a direct replacement.
Recent reports have suggested Liverpool are unlikely to pursue a replacement unless an opportunity becomes available before the deadline.
Jones set for first move away from Liverpool
The transfer will be Jones’ first move away from Liverpool since joining the club’s academy.
He progressed through the youth system before establishing himself in the first team and made his senior England debut in 2024.
Jones has won six major trophies with Liverpool and leaves having made more than 200 appearances for his boyhood club.
His move to Inter will also give him the opportunity to play outside England for the first time, with the Serie A champions having already brought in Stones and Spence during the summer window.
Inter have been interested in Jones for some time and are now set to complete the deal, subject to his medical.
