Liverpool collapse in second half of Leeds United friendly to lose 4-2

Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States ended on a disappointing note as Leeds United fought back from two goals down to claim a 4-2 victory in Chicago, handing Andoni Iraola plenty to consider before the new campaign.

Despite producing arguably their strongest first-half performance of the summer, Liverpool collapsed after the interval, conceding four unanswered goals in a dramatic 25-minute spell as Daniel Farke’s side capitalised on a much-changed Reds lineup.

Bright first-half display

Liverpool looked every bit the dominant side during the opening 45 minutes, with new arrivals Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz making their first appearances of the summer after returning to the squad.

The Reds’ aggressive pressing and slick passing repeatedly unsettled Leeds, with Luke Chambers opening the scoring after just seven minutes. The young defender, operating in a more central role after impressing in previous friendlies, reacted quickest inside the box to fire home following Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner.

Liverpool doubled their advantage before half-time with an impressive team move. Trey Nyoni switched play to Jeremie Frimpong, whose cutback found Wirtz to finish confidently after excellent build-up involving Isak.

Rio Ngumoha continued to impress on the left wing throughout the first half, while Nyoni once again strengthened his case for regular first-team involvement after another composed midfield display.

Second-half collapse raises concerns

The game changed completely after the interval as Iraola rotated heavily, introducing a number of younger players alongside experienced figures.

Leeds took full advantage, exposing Liverpool’s inexperienced defensive unit and repeatedly finding success from attacking situations and set-pieces. The back line, which included Calvin Ramsay, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, Mor Talla Ndiaye and Kostas Tsimikas by the closing stages, struggled to cope with Leeds’ pressure.

While pre-season results are rarely the priority, the manner of Liverpool’s defensive collapse will concern Iraola, particularly with the Premier League opener approaching.

The defeat also highlighted a lack of depth and physicality in certain areas of the squad, with Liverpool unable to maintain the intensity that had defined their excellent first-half performance.

Iraola: “We’ve learned a lot”

Speaking after the match, Iraola insisted the defeat could prove valuable despite the disappointing result.

“I think we learn a lot of things. Obviously, it’s not the result you want but I think (it was) probably the most useful friendly we played – in a positive way in the first half and in a negative way in the second half.

“I think we’ve learned a lot and I think we can take good conclusions and solve some things.”

Earlier in the week, the Liverpool boss also acknowledged the uncertainty that often surrounds the closing stages of the transfer window.

“I particularly hate this month of August because you start the competitions and you still don’t know if some of the players are going to leave and who’s going to come – there is a lot of uncertainty.”

Transfer decisions edging closer

Liverpool return to the AXA Training Centre with several senior internationals set to link up with the squad, including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Alisson Becker and new signing Victor Munoz. Alexis Mac Allister remains on extended leave following Argentina’s run to the World Cup final.

No new signings arrived during the club’s American tour, with Iraola preferring to assess his current squad before deciding where reinforcements are required.

Sunday’s defeat is unlikely to change Liverpool’s ambitions for the season, but it has offered the manager a clearer picture of where improvements may be needed before competitive football begins.
