Liverpool complete loan signing of Barcelona club-captain Ronald Araujo

Liverpool have completed the signing of Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan, with the agreement including an option to make the Uruguay international’s move to Anfield permanent.

The 27-year-old defender becomes another addition to Liverpool’s defensive ranks ahead of the new Premier League campaign, with the club having been looking to strengthen at the back following Ibrahima Konate’s departure Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Araujo joined Barcelona from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018 and has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the Spanish giants. He has won three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies during his time at the club, while his versatility also allows him to operate at right-back.

The defender was handed the Barcelona captaincy in January following goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s loan departure, although his opportunities became more limited last season.

Araujo made just 11 La Liga starts as Barcelona claimed their 29^th Spanish league title. His playing time was restricted under head coach Hansi Flick, with Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi emerging as the preferred central defensive pairing.

Despite his reduced role, Araujo remains under contract at Barcelona until 2031.

The defender said he was delighted to have secured a move to Liverpool and is eager to begin working with his new team-mates.

“I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I’m excited to meet my team-mates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated and really up for getting going,” he said.

Araujo also believes the move represents an important step in his career after his playing time at Barcelona became increasingly limited.

“It was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take.

“As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.”

The move also follows a difficult period for Araujo last season. In December, Barcelona granted him a leave of absence to prioritise his mental health after he was sent off during the Champions League defeat by Chelsea.

Araujo spent time with his family in Uruguay before returning to Barcelona training in January. He subsequently marked his first start since his break by scoring in the club’s Copa del Rey quarter-final victory over Albacete the following month.

Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements has been increased by a number of injury concerns within the squad.

Alongside Konate’s departure, Joe Gomez, summer signing Jeremy Jacquet and Italian teenager Giovanni Leoni have all been continuing their recoveries from injury.

Jacquet, 21, joined Liverpool from Rennes in a £60m deal last month but has yet to feature in any of the club’s pre-season friendlies because of a minor knee problem.

New head coach Andoni Iraola said that Jacquet “should be fine” to feature in Liverpool’s double-header against Como on Sunday.

Iraola was forced to field an inexperienced defensive pairing in Liverpool’s 3-2 pre-season defeat by Monaco at Anfield, with 35-year-old captain Virgil van Dijk partnered by Austrian teenager Ifeanyi Ndukwe.

Ndukwe, who stands at 6ft 6in, became a Liverpool player this summer after agreeing a move from Austria Vienna in January.

The 18-year-old has impressed during pre-season, although he will not be available to Iraola in competitive action this year as he does not yet qualify for a UK work permit.

Araujo’s arrival therefore provides Liverpool with another experienced option in defence as they prepare for the new Premier League season.

Liverpool will begin their campaign away to Newcastle United on Sunday, 23 August, kicking off at 16:30.
