Newcastle United reject Arsenal’s opening bid for captain Bruno Guimarães

Arsenal have seen their opening bid for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães rejected, with the Magpies determined to keep hold of one of their most influential players ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Premier League champions have opened discussions with Newcastle over a move for the Brazil international, but their first offer has been turned down as negotiations continue.

Despite Newcastle’s stance, Guimarães is understood to have informed the club last month that he would like to complete a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer. Arsenal are now considering whether to return with an improved bid as they weigh up their next move in the transfer market.

The 28-year-old has reported to Newcastle’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, after travelling from Brazil. His arrival was agreed with the club, and he is expected to rejoin the squad while his future remains the subject of speculation.

Newcastle remain keen to retain their captain, who has two years remaining on his current contract, with the club also holding the option to extend the deal by a further year.

Since arriving from Lyon in January 2022 for £40 million, Guimarães has become one of the club’s standout performers. He has made 195 appearances in all competitions, scoring 31 goals while playing a key role in Newcastle’s rise in recent seasons.

The midfielder also paid tribute to former head coach Eddie Howe following his departure from St James’ Park last week, describing him as the “king of this club” in an emotional social media post.

Alongside a photograph of Howe, Guimarães wrote: “King of this club!! Thanks for everything you’ve done for us.

“I loved enjoying our time together. Thanks for making me a better player and person! No words I can say will really say how much I enjoyed being our player. Wish you all the very best in your future, gaffer.”

With Arsenal expected to bid again for the Brazilian international, it could be a matter of time until the central midfielder joins the Premier League champions.
