Qatar Racing British Champions Day returns to Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 17th October, bringing together championship races from six furlongs through to two miles and providing a fitting finale to another memorable Flat racing campaign.

Calandagan defeated Ombudsman in last year’s race before the contest was subsequently recognised as the joint-highest-rated race staged anywhere in the world during 2025. Both feature among the 2026 entries, although Calandagan’s connections have indicated that his participation could depend on conditions as they build towards a planned defence of the Japan Cup.
Constitution River and Diamond Necklace are also among the Champion Stakes entries, giving the contest another strong three-year-old presence. The final make-up of the field remains open, but the depth of quality among the potential runners points towards another major contest at Ascot.
Almeraq Targets Third Group 1 of the Season
One horse whose Champions Day target is becoming clearer is Almeraq.
William Haggas’ sprinter is being prepared for the Qatar Racing British Champions Sprint Stakes after collecting two Group 1 victories during an excellent 2026 campaign. His season has already included success at Royal Ascot before another top-level victory at Haydock, and connections have identified a return to Ascot as the plan if all remains well.
Comanche Brave, Mission Central and Venetian Sun were also included among the Sprint Stakes entries after each winning a British Group 1 sprint this season. That leaves the six-furlong contest with the potential to bring several of the year’s leading speedsters together on the same afternoon.
Trawlerman and Scandinavia Could Renew Their Rivalry
The staying division could also serve up another significant clash in the Qatar Racing British Champions Long Distance Cup.
Scandinavia produced a major performance to beat Trawlerman in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June, and both horses feature among the entries for the two-mile contest on Champions Day. Caballo De Mar and Limestone are also included among the potential contenders.
With the Long Distance Cup providing one of the final opportunities for the leading stayers to meet on British soil this season, another battle between Scandinavia and Trawlerman would add further quality to an already stacked card.
Kalpana Among the Fillies & Mares Names to Watch
Kalpana is another major name who could return to Ascot in October.
The dual British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes winner was included among 48 entries for another attempt at the race, having already added the King George to her record this season. Estrange, Minnie Hauk, Thundering On and Johanna Walsh also feature among the potential opposition.
The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes completes the five Group 1 contests, with the entries including Bow Echo, Blue Bolt, Docklands, Gstaad, Precise, Ten Bob Tony, Thesecretadversary and True Love.
