The Premier League’s dominance of the transfer market extended well beyond the biggest deals. Only six of the 20 most expensive transfers of the summer involved players joining clubs outside the English top flight.

One of the clearest trends of the summer was the amount of money circulating between English clubs.
Around 35% of transfers involving a fee were completed from one Premier League club to another, up from 30% during the previous summer. When purchases from clubs lower down the English football pyramid are included, the figure rises to 44%.
