Rio Ngumoha Inspires Liverpool Fight Back From 2-0 Down to Beat Villarreal 4-3 in UEFA Champions League Thriller
Liverpool produced a remarkable comeback at Anfield on Tuesday night, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Villarreal 4-3 and maintain their perfect start to the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League.
Alexis Mac Allister scored twice, with Ronald Araujo and Florian Wirtz also on target as Andoni Iraola’s side recovered from a disastrous opening half-hour. However, it was 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha who stole the headlines with two assists in an outstanding individual performance.
The result secured Liverpool’s third consecutive victory in the Champions League league phase, taking their tally to nine points from three matches.
Liverpool Recover From Nightmare Start at Anfield
Villarreal stunned the home supporters after just four minutes when Georges Mikautadze capitalised on a misplaced header from Virgil van Dijk to give the Spanish visitors an early advantage.
Things went from bad to worse for Liverpool in the 29th minute when Sergi Cardona completed a swift Villarreal counter-attack to double their lead, leaving the Reds facing an uphill battle.
However, Mac Allister sparked the comeback in the 36th minute, heading home Kostas Tsimikas’ corner before Araujo connected with Ngumoha’s delivery in first-half stoppage time to bring Liverpool level.
Mac Allister and Ngumoha Complete Stunning Comeback
Liverpool emerged for the second half with renewed confidence and quickly began putting Villarreal under sustained pressure.
Ngumoha proved particularly troublesome for the visitors, repeatedly finding space down the right flank. His excellent work created Liverpool’s third goal in the 65th minute, beating his defender before delivering a pass for Mac Allister to complete his brace.
Just three minutes later, substitute Florian Wirtz added a fourth, finding the bottom corner following a pass from Cody Gakpo to put Liverpool firmly in control.
Villarreal refused to surrender, with Tani Oluwaseyi scoring in the 87th minute to set up a nervous finish. However, Liverpool held on to secure a memorable victory in front of 59,610 supporters at Anfield.
Ngumoha’s performance was another major positive for Iraola, with the teenager becoming Liverpool’s youngest player to register an assist in the Champions League.
Liverpool Continue Perfect Champions League Start
Liverpool’s victory follows their thrilling 6-3 win away against LASK and their opening European success against Atletico Madrid, leaving the Reds with three wins from three in the league phase.
