Warren Gatland is in his second spell in charge, and he will lead his Wales side against Italy in Round Five of the 2024 Guinness Six Nations at the Principality Stadium on Saturday, 16^th March 2024.

Gatland replaced Wayne Pivac as the Head Coach of Wales in December 2022. Here began Gatland’s second stint in this post.

Spending his entire playing career in Rugby Union with Waikato, he played as a hooker at the club 140 times between 1986 and 1994. At the end of his career as a player, he joined Galwegians RFC as a player-coach in 1989. After 5 years in this role, he decided to leave the club after deciding to retire ahead of the 1995 season.

He joined Thames Valley as an assistant coach in 1994 before leaving for Connacht to be their head coach two years later. He became Ireland’s Head Coach in what was his first international job in 1998, and he almost led his team to glory, but despite their best efforts, they lost out to an England side led by Clive Woodward in 2001 on points difference.

Gatland joined Wales in 2007 for his first spell in charge, and it was a highly successful tenure for the former New Zealand international. In his 12 years in charge, he won three Six Nations Championships (2008, 2012 & 2019) – his side were also runners-up in 2016 and 2018. All three championship victories were part of grand slams.

Wales have been very successful in the Six Nations over the years, with their triumphs coming in 2005, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2019 & 2021.

Italy joined to form the Six Nations in 2000 and has since never tasted glory.

Kieran Crowley has been Head Coach of Italy since he was appointed to replace Franco Smith on Wednesday, 19^th May 2021.

Wales first met Italy in a competitive match in 1994. Over the years, they have played each other 31 times. Historically Wales has the superior record with 27 victories compared to just 3 for Italy. However, Italy did win 22-21 in their last meeting, which was at the 2022 Six Nations.
