Italy v Ireland Guinness Six Nations 2025
Ireland will be attempting to win what would be a historic and unprecedented third Six Nations Championship title in a row in 2025, and they will be facing Italy at the Stadio Olimpico as part of their title defence. Italy themselves will be looking to build on the 5th place finish that they achieved in 2024’s Six Nations Championship.
The game between Italy and Ireland will be played at the Stadio Olimpico in the Italian Capital City of Rome on Saturday, 15th March 2025, with a 14:15 kick-off that afternoon.
Gonzalo Quesada has been in charge of the Italian national team since he officially took over from predecessor Kieran Crowley on 1st January 2024, after the announcement that took place a few months earlier on 16th June 2023. The 2025 Guinness Six Nations Championship will be the Argentine Head Coach’s second in charge.
Italy’s best performance ever in a Six Nations campaign came in the most recent one in 2024, where they accumulated 11 points to finish in 5th place after managing to beat Wales on the final day to prevent themselves from being awarded the Wooden Spoon again.
As for Ireland, Andy Farrell has been in post since he was appointed to succeed Joe Schmidt in 2019, with the announcement coming in November the previous year. He has so far led Ireland to no less than two Six Nations titles, both in successive years with them being won in 2023 and in the most recent championship in 2024.
These are just two of Ireland’s six Six Nations title wins, with the rest coming in 2009, 2014, 2015, and 2018.
The most recent Six Nations match between Italy and Ireland took place at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday, February 11, in Dublin. It was an emphatic 36 – 0 win for Farrell’s Ireland, with Jack Crowley (6’), Dan Sheehan (23’, 49’), Jack Conan (36’), James Lowe (61’), and Calvin Nash (77’) all scoring tries for the home side.
No penalties were scored, but Ireland did scored 3 conversions on that afternoon, courtesy of Jack Crowley (24’, 38’) and Harry Byrne (78’).
Both Italy and Ireland occupy positions in the highly prestigious top ten of the current World Rugby Rankings. Italy is 8th on 79.41 points, having climbed a place thanks to their best-ever Guinness Six Nations performance in 2024. Meanwhile, Ireland is 2nd with 90.69 points after a second successive Six Nations title win, with only reigning World Champions South Africa above them in 1st place on 94.54 points.
Overall, in all competitions, Italy and Ireland have come face to face on 37 occasions over the years, with no less than a total of 33 wins for Ireland in comparison to Italy’s 4 as of the time of writing. These two nations have never drawn against each other to date.
