Italy v Wales Guinness Six Nations 2025
The historic and equally iconic Stadio Olimpico in Rome is set to host a crucial clash between Gonzalo Quesada’s Italy and Warren Gatland’s Wales in the 2025 Guinness Six Nations. Both sides will be looking to improve on their 5th and 6th place finishes in the most recent Championship, and a victory for either would enhance their chances of doing so.
These two teams are set to go toe to toe on Saturday, 8th February 2025, in what will be a 14:15 on that afternoon in the Italian Capital.
Italian Head Coach Quesada took over on 1 January 2024, after initially being announced as Kieran Crowley’s successor as Head Coach of the national team on 16 June 2023. Warren Gatland is currently in his second spell in charge after being appointed to replace previous Head Coach Wayne Pivac back in 2022.
During his first spell in charge of the Welsh national team, which spanned 12 years between 2007 and 2019, Gatland led the team to several Six Nations titles. Overall, he has won this Championship on four occasions, which came in 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2019. The triumphs in 2008, 2012 and 2019 were all part of historic Grand Slams.
These Six Nations title wins are four of Wales’ six over the years. Their other two came in 2005 and 2021.
Moving on to Italy, they have never won the Six Nations Championship title, and they didn’t win the Home Nations or the Five Nations either. The 2024 Six Nations actually saw Quesada’s side complete the best campaign in this Championship for Italy, with 11 points securing a 5th-place finish. They achieved this after defeating Wales on the final day of the tournament—Gatland’s side will be looking for revenge in Rome.
This aforementioned game was, of course, their most recent encounter in the Six Nations Championship, and a 21 – 24 victory at the Principality Stadium for Italy meant that Wales got the Wooden Spoon. Wales got three tries that day, thanks to Elliot Dee (63’), Will Rowlands (78’) and Mason Grady (81’), whilst Monty Ioane (19’) and Lorenzo Pani (45’) both scored both tries for Italy that day.
Paolo Garbisi (5’, 13’, 70’) and Martin Page-Relo (72’) got Italy’s four penalties, whilst Wales did not score one. Wales got three conversions through Sam Costelow (63’) and Ioan Lloyd (79’, 81’), whilst the aforementioned Garbisi got Italy’s only conversion of the game on that day (46’).
Both of these international teams are currently occupying spots in the top ten of the World Rugby Rankings as of the time of writing. Wales are currently sat 10th with 77.26, and narrowly behind Australia in 9th place (77.48). Meanwhile, Italy have risen one place to 8th with 79.41 points flowing their 5th place finish in 2023’s Championship.
Overall, in all competitions, Italy and Wales have faced each other 33 times. Wales has the most wins in this fixture to date, with 28, compared to 4 for Italy. As of the time of writing, there has been just a single draw between them.
The game between these two teams will be played at the historic and iconic Stadio Olimpico in the Italian Capital City of Rome, in the 2025 Guinness Six Nations, on Saturday, 8th February 2025, with a 14:15 p.m. kick-off.
