Steve Borthwick’s England are set to welcome rivals Scotland to the iconic and historic Twickenham Stadium in round three of the 2025 Guinness Six Nations. The game will get underway at 16:45 on Saturday, February 22nd, 2025.
Borthwick has been the Head Coach of the England team since his appointment on Monday, December 19th, 2022, succeeding Eddie Jones.
England, as of the time of writing, hold the record for the most Six Nations titles won by any national time in the entire history of the tournament with no less than seven in all. Their wins have come in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2011, 2016, 2017 and of course most recently in the 2020 iteration of the Guinness Six Nations.
As for Scotland, they have never won the Six Nations, but they did win the final ever Five Nations all the way back in 1999. They had also won in 9 years earlier in 1990, a year which also saw them complete the Grand Slam, the Triple Crown and win that year’s Calcutta Cup, which came under the stewardship of Ian McGeechan.
In the Rugby World Rankings, England sits fifth with 84.93, 0.64 points ahead of sixth-place Scotland, who currently have 84.29 points to their name.
England and Scotland will once again be contesting the coveted Calcutta Cup, which has existed since these two rival nations came face to face for the very first time more than 100 years ago on 10 March 1879. The first one was a draw, but England were the first to win the cup outright a year later at the Whalley Range in Manchester on 28Â February 1880.
Overall, England has won the Calcutta Cup the most times, with 82 wins. Their last experience of lifting this piece of silverware came back in 2020 when they were 13 – 6 winners at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.
Scotland won what was their fourth consecutive Calcutta Cup title after beating England 30 – 21 back on 24th February 2024 at Murrayfield Stadium.
There have been a number of particularly memorable matches between England and Scotland over the years.
One came in 2019 when the two rivals played out an incredible 38 – 38 draw at Twickenham Stadium. England scored the fastest try bonus point in the history of the Six Nations, scoring no less than four tries in just half an hour. This was a great game, with both sides coming close to winning that year’s Calcutta Cup. England did come close to losing, but they secured the draw thanks to a very late try from George Ford.
Two years earlier, in the 2017 Six Nations, England won the Calcutta Cup emphatically, beating Scotland 61 – 21 at Twickenham. This was the most points ever scored against Scotland, and it matched England’s record winning margin against their rivals, which was set in 2001 when they were 43 – 3 winners. Anthony Watson and Billy Vunipola both got tries, Danny Care got a brace, and Jonathan Joseph got a hat-trick.
Overall, England and Scotland have faced each other on at least 142 occasions over the years, with 76 wins for England and 47 wins for Scotland. There have been 19 draws between these two Calcutta Cup rivals.
This fixture is set to be enthralling and with an incredible atmosphere to boot at Twickenham Stadium on 22nd February 2025. No England fan will want to miss an occasion like this!
