When is the next Ashes Series?
The much anticipated Ashes Series between England and Australia is set to return in 2027.
The Ashes Series, contested between England and Australia, is cricket’s most iconic and historic fixture on the sporting calendar. The high prestige of this series, together with the world-class action and spectacular atmosphere, ensures this contest between two fierce rivals is always highly anticipated.
Anticipation is already growing ahead of the next Ashes Series between these cricket powerhouses, which will be taking place from June 2027 through until August 2027.
Edgbaston, Lord’s, Trent Bridge, Utilita Bowl and The Oval have been announced to host the five tests, with Birmingham’s Edgbaston hosting the first and the series ending at The Oval.
The history of the famous Ashes Series dates back to 1882, with the first series of matches played across several venues in Australia. The inaugural Series saw England emerge as the 2 –1 winners.
England went on to win the first 8 Ashes Series in succession between 1882 and 1890. The series results were as follows: 1884 (1 – 0), 1884/85 (3 – 2), 1886 (3 – 0), 1886/87 (2 – 0), 1887/88 (1 – 0), 1888 (2 – 1), 1890 (2 – 0).
The first one won by Australia was in the 1891/92 Ashes, when they beat their rivals 2–1 overall. England did, though, win the next two after that in 1893 and 1894/95, 1 – 0 and 3 – 2 respectively. Australia did regain the Ashes in 1897/98, winning 4–1.
There have been some iconic Ashes Test Matches over the years. The second match of the 2005 series at Edgbaston is arguably the most memorable of the lot, where Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison were among the stars of the show for England.
After the hosts had amassed a lead of 99 at the conclusion of the first innings. However, unfortunately for England, once the third innings had ended, Shane Warne had managed to inspire Australia to set a target of 282 if England wanted to make it 2 – 0 in the Series overall.
The tourists were reduced to 137 – 7 by the hosts, who looked set for victory. Shane Warne and Brett Lee scored 42 and 43, respectively, to put their team within just 3 runs of victory. Thankfully for England, after a succession of poor deliveries from Steve Harmison, the ball eventually found its way into the hands of Geraint Jones to seal the victory for hosts England.
The most recent Ashes Series between England and Australia took place in 2025, with all five tests held across Australia at Perth Stadium, The Gabba, Adelaide Oval, Melbourne Cricket Ground and Sydney Cricket Ground. The series ended in a resounding 4-1 victory for the Aussies.
However, there was one positive for England with Joe Root finally hitting a century in Australia after years of failing to do so
England and Australia fans will be eagerly anticipating the next Ashes Series taking place in 2027
