There are not many more high-profile games in the Premier League than those involving London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. The Gunners are led by Mikel Arteta, and these two London sides are set to resume their long-standing rivalry at the Emirates Stadium in the 2024/25 season.

Just two points separated Arsenal from title winners Manchester City at the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign, and the target for the North London club will be to fend off their Manchester rivals and finish at the Premier League’s summit this time around.

Arteta took over from Unai Emery as Gunners boss back in December 2019. Since then the club has achieved regular UEFA Champions League football once more, and not only that, they are also now regular title challengers alongside Pep Guardiola’s City side. Silverware has also arrived in this period with an FA Cup and two FA Community Shields.

Moving on to Chelsea, they will be looking for a new Head Coach following the departure of former Southampton and Spurs Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino, who took over at Stamford Bridge on 29th May 2023, succeeding Frank Lampard. Following an inconsistent start to the 2023/24 season, Pochettino did manage to guide the club to a solid 6th place finish, which will see them return to European Football in the UEFA Europa League next season.

There have been several memorable matches over the years between these two Premier League heavyweights.

One of the matches that comes to mind is one that took place in the 2000/01 season, and it is that 2 – 2 draw at Stamford Bridge. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (31’) and Gianfranco Zola (58’) had given the Blues what seemed to be a commanding 2 goal lead on either side of half time before Arsenal completed an incredible comeback thanks to goals from Thierry Henry (76’) and Sylvinho (86’).

One more that comes to mind is the match that Mikel Arteta himself played in, which was that 5 – 3 win against the Blues in October 2011. Frank Lampard gave Chelsea the lead (14’), before Robin van Persie equalised with just over half an hour gone (36’). John Terry then gave Chelsea the lead once more with just seconds of the first half remaining (45’).

Andre Santos quickly scored Arsenal’s second equaliser, before the Gunners took the lead for the first time through Theo Walcott (55’). Then, after a Juan Mata equaliser (80’), Robin van Persie completed his hat-trick to make it 5 – 3 in the dying embers of the second half (85’, 90+2’).

Arsenal and Chelsea have played against each other in a competitive fixture on 209 occasions as of the time of writing. It is the Gunners who have a superior record of 84 wins compared to the Blues’ 66. There have been 59 draws between them to date.
