Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are set to welcome Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United side to the heart of North London as they face each other at the iconic Emirates Stadium in the 2025/26 Premier League season. A win would be a big result for Arsenal, as it would give the Gunners some fresh momentum as well as a boost for themselves in the race for the title.
This game promises to be enthralling as the two teams both look to seal what would be an important victory. The atmosphere will also be incredible – Arteta’s Arsenal will know that beating the Magpies could prove to be a crucial victory in the context of their season, knowing every win will be vital for the Gunners this term.
Since taking over as Unai Emery’s permanent successor at Arsenal back in October 2019, this will be the Spaniard’s sixth season in charge of the club. A run of three successive second place finishes began in the 2022/23 season when a total of 84 points was enough for a runners-up spot, and they were just 5 points adrift of the eventual title winners Manchester City.
Then in the 2023/24 season, it was second again of course, and this season’s title race was even closer, with the Mikel Arteta-led Gunners only losing out by a margin of just two points between themselves and the Cityzens, who were that season’s Champions as well. Arsenal got 89 points compared to Manchester City’s 91 overall.
Then last season, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal finished in second place in the 2024/25 Premier League season, having been able to earn a total of 74 points from their 38 matches that season. Liverpool were the title winners that season.
Moving on to Newcastle United, Head Coach Eddie Howe has been in charge since he replaced Steve Bruce as Magpies boss back on 8th November 2021. In the 2022/23 season, Howe guided Newcastle to UEFA Champions League qualification with a 4th place finish after earning a grand total of 71 points from their 38 games that term. He also led them to their historic Carabao Cup win in March 2025 against Liverpool, who they were able to beat 2 – 1 thanks to goals from Dan Burn (45’) and Alexander Isak (52’), whilst it was Federico Chiesa who scored what was the only goal of the game for Liverpool deep into stoppage time under that famous arch at the iconic and historic Wembley Stadium.
Last season, Eddie Howe and Newcastle sealed what was a return to European Club Football’s greatest cup competition, the UEFA Champions League, thanks to a 5th place finish in the 2024/25 Premier League season, earning 66 points from their 38 matches in that campaign.
The last time that the two clubs met in what was a competitive fixture came back on Sunday 18th May 2025 in what was a contest in the Premier League. It was to be a narrow 1 – 0 victory in what was a competitive game in North London, where it was a goal from Declan Rice that proved to be a winning goal of the game early on into the second half of this game (55’).
Overall, Arsenal and Newcastle United have met competitively in all competitions on no less than 197 occasions over the years, and it is the Gunners with the most wins with 86, with Arsenal having more than the Magpies’ current total of 72 victories in this particular fixture. There have been 39 draws in total so far over the years as of the time of writing.
