Arsenal and Newcastle United, who finished in 2nd and 4th respectively in the 2023/24 Premier League season, are set to go head to head at the Emirates Stadium, as both sides look to carry the momentum gained into the new season. The Magpies will want to secure another top four finish whilst the Gunners will look to go one better than last season and win the league title.
Mikel Arteta’s appointment all the way back in November 2019 saw the Spaniard become Unai Emery’s permanent successor at the Emirates. As well as winning the FA Cup and Community Shield so far, Arteta has led Arsenal to a 5th place finish in 2021/22 before coming very close to winning the title, finishing in 2nd place with 84 points last season.
Following the dismissal of Steve Bruce, Eddie Howe became Head Coach of the Magpies on 8th November 2021. Howe has turned Newcastle’s fortunes around since he was appointed – in his first season, the Toon finished in 11th place with 49 points to their name, before going on to secure an extraordinary 4th place finish last season (2022/23).
Arsenal and Newcastle United have met on 191 occasions over the years, first meeting in a 2-2 league draw in September 1893 at the Manor Ground. Walter James Shaw and Arthur Elliott were on target for the Gunners, whilst it was Jock Sorley and Tom Crate who found the back of the net for the away side.
Their most recent meeting came on 7th May 2023, where Arsenal were 2-0 winners at St. James’ Park. An own goal from Fabian Schär (71’) and a fantastic finish from Gunners Captain Martin Ødegaard (14’) secured what was a vital three points for Arteta’s Arsenal.
Arsenal will be looking for a vital three points as they look to pip Manchester City to the title this season, whilst Newcastle will continue their momentum from last season and secure a spot in the top four for the second successive season.
This match between Arsenal and Newcastle United is set to be an enthralling and intense contest, with both clubs also looking to realise their ambitions for the 2023/24 Premier League season.
