Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal side are set to take on a newly promoted Sunderland side who are led by their French Head Coach Regis Le Bris in a game that will be taking place in the 2025/26 Premier League season at the iconic Emirates Stadium in the heart of North London. This game will be crucial for the Gunners as they look to strengthen their chances of winning the English top flight league title this season.
As for the Black Cats, they will be looking to survive relegation to remain in the Premier League for a second successive season, and victory against Arteta’s team would help them do so.
The atmosphere for the game itself is promising to be fantastic, with the match itself set to enthralling for all in attendance. The great atmosphere and game will make for what is to be a great occasion at the Emirates between these two Premier League clubs.
It is set to be another season under the stewardship of their current Boss Mikel Arteta, who has returned the club to becoming regular challengers for the title each season. In the 2022/23 season, the Gunners finished up in second place as the runners-up to Manchester City, after having got a grand total of 84 points from the 38 matches that they had played overall.
In the season that followed, 2023/24, Arsenal and Arteta came even closer to winning the title after this particular league campaign saw them earn as many as 89 points from all of their league games, only for title winners Manchester City to earn just two points more, with the Pep Guardiola-led Cityzens having earned a total of 91 points in the same number of games.
Moving on to Sunderland, their current Head Coach Regis Le Bris has been in charge of the North East club since his appointment back on 22nd June 2024. He permanently succeeded Michael Beale following a short interim spell with Mike Dodds in charge.
The 2024/25 campaign was the Frenchman’s first full season in charge of the club, guiding Sunderland to what was a 4th place finish after earning a grand total of 76 points from their 46 matches in the English Second Tier.
This got them a ticket into the Championship’s promotion play-offs, where after beating Frank Lampard’s Coventry City 3 – 2 on aggregate over the two legs, they went on to come back from 1 – 0 down to beat Sheffield United 2 – 1 at the iconic and historic Wembley Stadium to earn Sunderland promotion and a return to the English Premier League. The 2025/26 season will be the Black Cats’ first in the top flight since their relegation back in the 2016/17 campaign.
The last competitive fixture to have taken place between these two sides was an emphatic 5 – 1 victory for Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in what was the 5th Round of the 2020/21 League Cup on 21st December 2021. This was following goals from the likes of Eddie Nketiah (17’, 49’, 58’), Nicolas Pepe (27’), and Charlie Patino (90’).
In terms of the most recent Premier League fixture between these two sides took place at the Emirates Stadium, with the game having taken place back on 16th May 2017 in the heart of North London. It was a 2 – 0 victory for the Gunners against the Black Cats in the end thanks to the goals that came from Alexis Sanchez, who successfully scored a brace on that day for his team (72’, 81’).
Overall, these two clubs have met competitively in a number of competitions over the years, with them having played against each other a grand total of 154 occasions, and it is Arsenal who currently have the superior record of 63 victories, compared with the total of 50 for the Black Cats. There have also been 41 draws in total over the years between them so far as of the time of writing.
