Aston Villa, led by their Spanish Head Coach Unai Emery, are set to go toe to toe with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at Villa Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. Three points against the Gunners would boost the Villans’ chances of securing UEFA Champions League football for the second season running.
Last season was Emery’s first full campaign in charge of the West Midlands Club. He took charge of the Villans on 24th October 2022, when he succeeded Steven Gerrard shortly after a defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage. The club and the team have only gone from strength to strength since then.
His first win came from a 3 – 1 win against Manchester United, the Villans’ first since August 1995. In his 25 matches in charge in the 2022/23 season, he earned 15 wins and 49 points, which saw them secure qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League in 7th place with 61 points. From his first game, he took the Villans from 16th place to European Qualification, which was an extraordinary achievement.
The 2023/24 Premier League season was even better for all associated with Aston Villa Football Club. There were a number of notable results, such as a dominant 1 – 0 win against Manchester City, a 4 – 1 win at home to West Ham United, and an emphatic 6 – 1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at Villa Park.
Villa also did the double over Arsenal, beating them 1 – 0 at home thanks to a John McGinn goal (7’), before going on to beat the Gunners 2 – 0 at the Emirates Stadium a few months later after Leon Bailey (84’) and Ollie Watkins (87’) found the back of the net in North London.
In the end, Aston Villa finished fourth after successfully accumulating 68 points from the 38 top-flight matches that they played last season. This secured their qualification for the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, which was a reward for an incredible season for the Villans.
Moving on to Arsenal, their Current Head Coach, Mikel Arteta, took charge on 20th December 2019. They finished fifth in 2019/20, and he became the first Gunners boss to win a major trophy in their debut season with the North London Club since George Chapman did so in 1986/87. Arteta led the club to its record 14th FA Cup title after beating Chelsea 2 – 1 at Wembley.
Not only has he won the FA Community Shield twice so far, but he has also led them to two second-place finishes in the last two seasons, and they have recently been Manchester City’s biggest competition for the Premier League title.
These two clubs have met competitively 203 times in all competitions over the years, and the Gunners have the superior total of 87 wins compared to the Villans’ total of 71 overall. There have also been 45 draws played out between these two clubs to date.
Aston Villa and Arsenal are set to go toe to toe at Villa Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. This game is set to be captivating and highly competitive, with an incredible atmosphere in B6 to boot. Both clubs will be looking to enhance their chances of realising their respective ambitions for the season.
