A much-anticipated game will be taking place in B6 when a fierce local rivalry is renewed when Unai Emery’s Aston Villa goes toe to toe with Vitor Pereira’s Wolves side at Villa Park in the heart of the city of Birmingham during the 2025/26 Premier League season. With the Villans targeting a return to the highly prestigious UEFA Champions League this year, victory will be vital for Villa.
With much at stake, including local bragging rights, the atmosphere promises to be nothing short of electric. The game itself is set to be fiery, enthralling, and highly competitive. With a win, Villa will gain momentum in the race for a spot in European Club Football’s most prestigious cup competition this season.
Following the departure of Steven Gerrard, current Head Coach Unai Emery’s appointment was confirmed by the West Midlands club back in October 2022 before his tenure then officially got underway a month later in November 2022. The Spaniard led the Villans from a relegation battle to European Qualification, with his side securing qualification for the following season’s UEFA Conference League after they had secured a 7th place finish in the English top flight with a total of 61 points to their name after 38 games.
Then came the 2023/24 campaign, which was to be Emery’s first full season in charge. It was a positive year for the club as a whole, and in the Premier League, the Villans were able to secure a return to European Football’s top table, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League after finishing in 4th place after having accumulated a grand total of 68 points.
As for the Conference League that season, they went on to unfortunately get knocked out in the Semi Finals by Greek side Olympiacos who did indeed go on to win the whole competition with victory against Italian Serie A side Fiorentina in Athens, Greece, beating La Viola 1 – 0 thanks to a historic winning goal from Ayoub El Kaabi (116’) to make them the first Greek team to win a European trophy.
Last season (2024/25), Villa made it all the way to the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were only very narrowly knocked out in the end by the eventual winners Paris Saint Germain, who beat their English counterparts 5 – 4 on aggregate. Unai Emery’s Villans did beat the Parisians 3 – 2 in the second leg at Villa Park and could even have leveled the tie with chances that they created that night.
They had beaten the likes of Bologna (2 – 0), Bayern Munich (1 – 0), RB Leipzig (3 – 2), and Celtic (4 – 2) in the League Phase alone before then defeating Club Brugge emphatically 6 – 1 on aggregate over two legs in the Round of 16. It was a 3 – 1 win for the Villa in the first leg away from home before beating the Belgian giants 3 – 0 at Villa Park in the second leg to seal their progression.
As for that season’s Premier League campaign, Emery and his Villa side completed the season with a points total that stood at 66 following the 38 games which was enough for European Qualification via the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League, only missing out on another season of UEFA Champions League Football on goal difference alone.
Moving on to Wolves, their current Head Coach Vitor Pereira has been in charge ever since the Portuguese was officially confirmed as successor to previous boss Gary O’Neil on 19th December 2024. The remainder of the 2024/25 campaign saw him lead his new club to safety finishing in 16th place with 42 points, which saw them avoid relegation by a margin of no less than 17 points in the end.
Villa were comfortable 3 – 1 winners the last time that these two clubs met at Villa Park, which was in the Premier League back on 21st September 2024. The hosts were able to score that day thanks to the goals from the likes of Ollie Watkins (73’), Ezri Konsa (88’), and Jhon Duran (90+4’), whilst it was Matheus Cunha who scored the only goal for the visitors on that day (25’).
Overall, Aston Villa and Wolves have gone head to head competitively in all competitions on 138 occasions in total, with Villa having the currently superior record of 58 victories compared with Wolves’ total of 45 wins so far, as of the time of writing. There have also been 35 draws between these two rival clubs.
