Chelsea are set to welcome newly promoted Luton Town to Stamford Bridge as they come face to face in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Hatters will be playing their first ever Premier League season and they will be playing the Blues in a league match for the first time in more than 30 years.
Mauricio Pochettino, appointed as Graham Potter’s permanent successor at Chelsea on 29th May 2023, will aim to return the club to the Champions League by securing a top four finish in the Premier League table. Pochettino returns to English football after a spell at Paris Saint-Germain, who he led to a number of trophies including the 2021/22 Ligue 1 title.
The Argentine Head Coach is best known in English football for his stellar work with Southampton and Spurs. After securing an 8th place finish with the Saints in 2013/14, he joined Spurs at the end of that season. Pochettino’s Lilywhites came within 90 minutes of Champions League glory in 2019, but they were beaten in the final by Liverpool.
Whilst Chelsea did have a below par season last term, finishing 12th, the Blues did still have an impressive Champions League campaign. After winning a group containing AC Milan, RB Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb, Chelsea made it to the Quarter Finals of the competition where they lost on aggregate over two legs against 14-time European Cup winners Real Madrid.
A tally of 38 goals and 44 points last season meant a mid-table finish for the Blues, but they were very proficient in the defensive side of the game. Chelsea only conceded 47 goals – the joint fourth best with Liverpool.
The Blues’ leading scorer was Kai Havertz with 7. Raheem Sterling and João Félix just trailed the Germany international with 6 and 4 goals respectively.
After Nathan Jones departed for Southampton, Rob Edwards was named as his successor at Kenilworth Road on 17th November 2022. Edwards built on the foundations left by Jones, leading the club to a 3rd place finish in the Championship, earning 80 points. After victory against Sunderland in the semi-final, the Hatters faced Coventry City in the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley, where they beat the Sky Blues 6-5 on penalties.
Carlton Morris was Luton’s leading goal scorer with 20 goals – only Viktor Gyökeres (Coventry City – 21) and Chuba Akpom (Middlesbrough – 28) got more.
Chelsea and Luton first met in an FA Cup 3rd Round tie at Stamford Bridge, where the home side won 4-0. Overall, the Blues and the Hatters have played each other 45 times over the years and it is Chelsea with the superior record of 19 wins as opposed to Luton’s 14. There have been 12 draws.
Their most recent meeting came in the FA Cup on 2nd March 2022 at Kenilworth Road. Chelsea won this FA Cup 5th Round tie 3-2, with Saúl (27’), Timo Werner (68’) and Romelu Lukaku (78’) scoring for the away side. Central defender Reece Burke (2’) and forward Harry Cornick (40’) were on the scoresheet for Luton.
