David Moyes’ Everton are set to welcome an Aston Villa side led by their Spanish Head Coach Unai Emery to Goodison Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. With the target being to comfortably avoid relegation and climb the table for a potential mid-table finish, the Toffees getting all three points against the Villa would be vital.
This is the oldest continuously played fixture in the English Football League’s history. These two historic clubs first met in a competitive fixture on 22nd September 1888.
The 2024/25 campaign will also be the club’s last at Goodison Park before they move into the 52,888 capacity Everton Stadium ahead of the 2025/26 season.
David Moyes is now enjoying his second spell as Everton as Head Coach, with his long awaited return to the Merseyside Club being officially announced by the Toffees on 11th January 2025. The Scot’s first spell at the club was almost a decade long, lasting for a total of 9 years, from 2002 to 2013, when he departed for pastures new at Manchester United, where he succeeded the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
Moyes had a successful time with Everton in his first spell. It included qualification for the UEFA Champions League in 3004/05, whilst also qualifying for the UEFA Cup (now the UEFA Europa League) on two occasions, in 2006/07 with a sixth place finish, and then with a fifth place finish in 2007/08. In the former, Everton reached the last sixteen where they were unfortunately beaten by Fiorentina of the Italian Serie A.
Moyes’ time at the club is also famous for signings of players that would go on to become club favourites. This included the likes of Yakubu, Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill, Andy Johnson, Steven Pienaar, Phil Jagielka, Kevin Mirallas, and Leighton Baines.
David Moyes takes over from Sean Dyche as his successor, who took charge of Everton back on 30th January 2023. Everton went on to stay up in the Premier League in 2022/23, finishing 17th with 36 points, avoiding relegation by a margin of just 2 points. By the end of the 2023/24 campaign, they stayed up more comfortably despite all of the points deductions that they suffered over the course of last year.
Moving on to Aston Villa, their Head Coach, Unai Emery, took charge of the West Midlands club shortly after a heavy 3 – 0 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage in November 2022. He transformed the club’s fortunes, taking them from 16th place to a spectacular 7thplace finish with 61 points – securing UEFA Europa Conference League Football for the 2023/24 season.
Last season saw the Villans continuing to go from strength to strength. They were knocked out of the UEFA Europa Conference League by the eventual winners Olympiacos. However, they managed to secure UEFA Champions League Football for the 2024/25 campaign after successfully securing a 4th place finish last term with 68 points to their name from 38 matches.
These clubs have gone toe to toe in a competitive fixture in all competitions no less than 231 times, and the Villans have the most victories with 87 compared to the Toffees’ total of 83 to date. And, at the time of writing, there have been 61 draws between these teams so far.
Everton and Aston Villa go face to face at Goodison Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. This game is set to be enthralling and entertaining with a sensational atmosphere to boot at Goodison Park.
