Led by the experienced David Moyes, Everton finished last season in 13th. Despite finishing in the bottom half, The Toffees were in the race for European qualification throughout the campaign and narrowly missed out by just four points.
The aim this year will be to go one step further and qualify to play on the continental stage and face some of Europe’s elite at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the very first time.
Everton boasts some of the most exciting talent in the country, with the likes of Iliman N’Diaye, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Jordan Pickford and James Garner being some of their key men.
N’Diaye and Dewsbury-Hall recorded 23 goal contributions between them in all competitions last season and will once again be key to Everton’s hopes of a successful season.
This will be Moyes’ 21st season in charge of a Premier League side after previous spells at Sunderland, West Ham United, Manchester United and his first spell at Everton, which spanned from 2001 – 2012.
Unai Emery, who has enjoyed a trophy-laden career, has admitted he is desperate to reach the heights of the Premier League and UEFA Champions League after lifting his fifth Europa League last season.
The Spaniard has also lifted the cup with Sevilla and Villarreal throughout his 22-year managerial career.
Following his retirement from playing, Emery was appointed by lower league Spanish Lorca Deportiva CF before making the move to second division side UD Almeria.
Emery achieved promotion with Almeria, their first since 1980, which earned him a huge move to Spanish giants Valencia.
The now Villa boss spent four years at the Mestalla and qualified for the UEFA Champions League in three of his four seasons following the departure of Rafa Benitez to Liverpool.
Southern Spain was next for Emery as he was appointed by Sevilla. Despite not hitting the heights he may have achieved in domestic football, Emery lifted three Europa Leagues with the club, making him a modern icon of the club.
Following 12 seasons throughout the Spanish pyramid, Emery agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain. PSG had dominated French football for years before Emery’s arrival, and the Spaniard was expected to easily waltz towards the league title and challenge to lift the Champions League.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t quite how it worked out. In his first season, the Parisians finished runners-up to Kylian Mbappe’s AS Monaco by eight points before crashing out of the Champions League in the round of 16 against Barcelona after losing 6-1 in the second leg at the Nou Camp.
Following a brief spell with Arsenal and Villarreal, Emery now finds himself in the West Midlands managing Aston Villa.
After Steven Gerrard was dismissed by Villa, Emery became the clear frontrunner from the off, and it’s worked out superbly.
The club has now qualified for European competition for four consecutive years and lifted the Europa League after beating Freiburg in the final at Besiktas Park.
Overall, these two clubs have gone head to head in a competitive fixture in all competitions on a total of 235 occasions, and it is Villa who have the superior record of 89 victories compared with the Toffees’ record of 84 overall. Villa has drawn with Everton on 62 occasions to date.
