Sean Dyche’s Everton and a Nottingham Forest side led by Steve Cooper are set to come face to face at Goodison Park in the 2023/24 Premier League season. It took a victory on the final day to secure the Toffees’ spot in the top flight whilst Forest narrowly avoided an immediate Championship return after spending more than 20 years away. Both clubs will aim to survive relegation more comfortably this term and climb the table.
Frank Lampard had taken over at Everton following the departure of Rafa Benitez with the team in 16th place. Lampard led the club to Premier League survival with a single game remaining when the Toffees beat Crystal Palace 3-2. However, with the club finding itself in 19th place with 15 points in January 2023, he was dismissed in favour of Sean Dyche.
Dyche, who had been out of work since leaving Burnley in April 2022, he took over at Goodison Park with the aim of preventing a first relegation for the club in almost 70 years. Everton did survive in the end following the aforementioned 1-0 home victory against Bournemouth where a spectacular strike from Abdoulaye Doucouré secured safety for the Toffees (57’).
Everton managed to pick up other vital victories towards the end of the season. One was a 1-0 win against Arsenal, where it was James Tarkowski who scored the all important goal for the home side (60’). Another massive win came away from home against Brighton where Dyche’s Toffees won 5 – 1, courtesy of Abdoulaye Doucouré (1’, 29’), Dwight McNeil (76’, 90+6’) and an own goal from Seagulls goalkeeper Jason Steele (35’).
With 7 goals, former Burnley forward Dwight McNeil was Everton’s top goal scorer in the Premier League last term. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray were 2nd and 3rd in the club’s league scoring charts with 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
On 21st September 2021, Steve Cooper became Chris Hughton’s permanent successor at the City Ground with Nottingham Forest sitting bottom of the Championship table. Cooper led the Reds on a spectacular run of form throughout the remainder of the season with the club finding itself in 4th place with 80 points after 46 matches. Forest went on be promoted to the Premier League for the first time in more than 20 years after a 1-0 victory at Wembley against Huddersfield Town in the Championship Play-Off Final.
Nottingham Forest made a plethora of signings which did not disrupt their 2022/23 season in which they managed to finish 16th with 38 points. They finished 4 points clear of the relegation zone.
Taiwo Awoniyi, a summer signing from German outfit Union Berlin, scored the most goals in the Premier League for Forest with 10 goals closely followed by Morgan Gibbs-White. Gibbs-White was a summer signing from Wolves. Danilo came third with 3 goals.
Everton and Nottingham Forest met competitively for the first time on 3rd September 1892 in a 2-2 league draw at Goodison Park. The Toffees have won 55 of their 130 matches compared to Forest’s 47. There have been 28 draws between these clubs.
The most recent match between these two teams mirrored their first ever league meeting as it was also a 2-2 draw, this time at the City Ground. Demarai Gray (10’ – Penalty) and Abdoulaye Doucouré (29’) scored the goals for the away team whilst Brennan Johnson (19’, 77’) was on target twice for Forest.
