Goodison Park will host a match between Everton and Newcastle United in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Premier League safety and distancing themselves from the relegation zone will be the goal for Sean Dyche’s side. Meanwhile, Eddie Howe and his Magpies side will have ambitions of another top-four finish to secure Champions League football for a second successive season.
Although only 2 points from safety, Everton sat in 19th place with 15 points by January 2023, which saw Frank Lampard get dismissed by the club. The Toffees quickly found the Chelsea legend’s permanent successor in the form of Sean Dyche, who had recently left Burnley with whom he had enjoyed ten successful years.
Dyche guided the club to Premier League safety by finishing in 17th place with 36 points and two above the drop. His first win came in his first match when the Toffees beat Arsenal 1-0 at Goodison Park thanks to a goal from James Tarkowski (60’).
Other vital wins came in the form of an emphatic 5-1 victory against Brighton on the South Coast before a spectacular Abdoulaye Doucouré goal secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Bournemouth on the final day of the 2022/23 season at Goodison Park, which confirmed their Premier League status for another season.
Dwight McNeil scored seven goals last season, making him the Toffees’ leading goal scorer in the Premier League. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray got 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
Following the dismissal of Steve Bruce, former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe was appointed by the Magpies as his permanent successor at St. James’s Park on 8th November 2021. By the end of his very first season in charge (2021/22), Howe’s side finished in 11th place and 14 clear of the drop after being in a relegation battle when he joined the club.
Last season, Howe’s first full campaign in charge (2022/23), Newcastle had an incredible season by performing beyond expectations and finished in 4th place with 71 points, which was enough to secure Champions League football.
Callum Wilson, who played for Howe at Bournemouth, was the Magpies’ leading scorer in the Premier League last term, with 18 goals in all. Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón was close behind, with 11 goals in the league. Summer signing Alexander Isak and Joelinton got 6 and 4 goals in the Premier League, respectively.
Everton and Newcastle United’s first competitive meeting was on 10th September 1898, in a league match where the Toffees won 3-0 at Goodison Park. Of their 182 meetings to date, Everton has the superior record of 75 wins compared to the Magpies’ 71. There have been 36 draws to date between these two clubs.
The most recent match to have taken place between these two teams took place on 27th April 2023 in the Premier League, where Newcastle United were 4-1 winners at Goodison Park.
