A significant victory for the Toffees would provide them with some fresh momentum going into the remainder of the games in the campaign. It would bring them a step closer to realising their ambition of securing a mid table finish, although they will feel that a top half finish may even be possible this term, especially if the team builds enough momentum throughout their latest Premier League campaign.
This will be the first time in the history of both these historic clubs that they have met in a competitive game at the modern Hill Dickinson Stadium, which has a capacity of 52,769 as of the time of writing. This game should therefore create a simply sensational atmosphere, together with what promises to be an enthralling and highly competitive game between the Toffees and the Magpies.
David Moyes is the incumbent Head Coach of Everton Football Club, with the Scot currently enjoying his second tenure at the Merseyside club. His original spell in charge of Everton was a more than ten year stint with the Blues from 2002 to 2013, which was when he decided to leave the Toffees in favour of a move to Manchester United, where he took over from Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford where he succeeded his fellow Scot.
The original era at the club with Moyes at the helm saw a number of great and very memorable players where the famous Everton blue, including the likes of Tim Cahill, Wayne Rooney, David Unsworth, Thomas Gravesen, Tim Howard, Yakubu, Steven Pienaar, Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, as well as many more.
Moyes’ return came after no less than 12 years away from the club’s dugout, with him having been in charge of the likes of Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland, and West Ham in the years between his two spells at Everton to date. He had European success with West Ham, with him winning the 2023 UEFA Conference League Final against Italian side Fiorentina. Moyes took charge back on 11th January 2025, with him succeeding Sean Dyche at the club.
His first few months in charge following his return saw him guide his club away from relegation and to a respectable 13th place finish after they had managed to earn a grand total of 48 points from their 38 games in all. The 2025/26 season will be Moyes’s first full season in charge for more than a decade.
Throughout their most recent Premier League campaign, Everton were able to get the better of plenty of clubs, including some crucial victories against the likes of Newcastle United (0 – 1), Fulham (1 – 3), Nottingham Forest (0 – 1), Leicester City (4 – 0), Spurs (3 – 2), Wolves (4 – 0), and finally Crystal Palace (2 – 1).
Moving on to Newcastle United, their current boss Eddie Howe has been in charge ever since he was chosen to permanently succeed Steve Bruce at St. James’s Park all the way back on 8th November 2021. He did lead them to their first major trophy in 56 years when they were able to beat Liverpool 2 – 1 at Wembley to win the 2025 Carabao Cup.
He has also led them to two qualifications for the UEFA Champions League, most recently doing so last season, when they finished in 5th place with 66 points, securing their place on goal difference alone ahead of Aston Villa in 6th.
The most recent competitive game between these two clubs was an encounter in the Premier League back on Sunday 25th May 2025, when the Toffees won 1 – 0 at St. James’s Park thanks to a goal for Everton midway in the second half thanks to Carlos Alcaraz (65’).
Overall, Everton and Newcastle United have met competitively in all competitions on at least 186 occasions. The Toffees currently hold the superior record, with 77 wins in this fixture, while the Magpies have slightly fewer wins, with 71. As of the time of writing, there have been 38 draws between these two teams to date.
