Everton, led by their Head Coach David Moyes, is set to welcome Kieran McKenna’s newly promoted Ipswich Town side to Goodison Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. With the Toffees targeting to comfortably stay in the league whilst also aiming for a mid-table finish, a victory against the Tractor Boys would potentially prove vitally important.
With this being Everton’s final-ever season at Goodison Park since moving there from Anfield in 1892, the Toffees will want to make this final-ever campaign at their history home exceedingly memorable. The club will then move into the 52,888-capacity Everton Stadium ahead of the 2025/26 season.
David Moyes made his return to the Everton hot seat after no less than 12 years away from the club, when the was officially confirmed as Sean Dyche’s successor at the Merseyside Club on Saturday 11th January 2025. He will be looking to make his second spell in charge of the Merseyside Club as memorable and successful as this first, which spanned almost ten years from 2002 before his almost decade in charge of the team ended with his departure for Manchester United in 2013, where he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Scot led the club to qualification for the UEFA Champions League in the 2004/05 season, whilst also qualifying for the UEFA Cup on two occasions, finishing 6th in the 2006/07 season, before going on to improve on this with a fantastic 5th place in the following campaign (2007/08). In the former (2006/07), Everton were able to get to the last sixteen, where they were defeated by Italy’s Fiorentina.
In between his two stints in charge at Everton, the Scot managed the likes of Manchester United (2013 – 2014), Real Sociedad (2014 – 2015), Sunderland (2016 – 2017), and West Ham United (2017 – 2018 & 2019 – 2024).
David Moyes predecessor, Sean Dyche, took charge back on 30th January 2023. Everton were able to retain their Premier League status by the end of the 2022/23 season, where they were able to finish in 17th place with 36 points, avoiding relegation by a margin of just 2 points. By the end of the 2023/24 campaign, they stayed up more comfortably despite all of the points deductions that they suffered over the course of last year.
Moving on to Ipswich Town, their current Head Coach, Kieran McKenna, took over from Paul Cook on 16 December 2021. His first half-season in charge in the 2021/22 season saw them finish in 15th place before achieving a return to the EFL Championship after finishing 2nd in the third tier.
Last season, in 2023/24, Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town surprised everyone with a superb campaign, with them accumulating a grand total of 96 points to finish as runners-up to Leicester City in the second-tier table to secure a rare feat of a second-consecutive promotion – this time to the Premier League – returning for the first time in more than 20 years.
These two clubs last met in a Premier League fixture at Goodison Park on 2nd February 2002, when Everton lost narrowly 2 – 1.
These two clubs have played each other in all competitions 59 times, and Everton has the superior record of 25 wins compared with the Tractor Boys’ total of 15 overall to date. As of the time of writing, these two teams have drawn 19 times.
Everton and Ipswich Town will go toe to toe at Goodison Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. This game is looking set to be intriguing and enthralling, with an awesome atmosphere to boot.
