Sean Dyche’s Everton will welcome a Manchester United side led by their Dutch Head Coach Erik Ten Hag to Goodison Park in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Toffees will have their sights on beating the drop once again but also climbing the table, whereas United will not only be looking for the Champions League, but they will also aim to be in the title race this term as well.
With Everton finding themselves in 19th place with 15 points, Frank Lampard was dismissed by the Toffees before Sean Dyche was appointed as his permanent successor at Goodison Park back in January 2023. Optimism was high, with the gap to safety standing at just 2 points behind Wolves in 17th place.
Dyche managed to keep the club in the Premier League, lifting them to 17th place with 36 points accumulated come the end of the 2022/23 season. The recovery began in his first match in charge, which was a 1-0 win against Arsenal at Goodison Park. Brighton was also beaten 5-1 away from home on the way to a final-day showdown with Bournemouth.
The Toffees secured a 1-0 victory against the Cherries courtesy of an Abdoulaye Doucouré wonder goal in the second half (57’).
With seven goals, English forward Dwight McNeil led the way in terms of goals for Everton in the Premier League last term, followed by Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray, who got 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
Ahead of the beginning of the 2022/23 Premier League season, Erik Ten Hag finally became Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s permanent successor at Old Trafford. The ex-Ajax boss managed to guide United to a 3rd place finish, accumulating 75 points and securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League. They also won the Carabao Cup after beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley. Midfielder Casemiro (33’) and Marcus Rashford (39’) got the goals under the arch that day.
Marcus Rashford was Manchester United’s top scorer in the Premier League last season with 17 goals. The England International was followed by Bruno Fernandes, who got eight goals. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho got six goals each.
Everton and Manchester United met competitively for the first time in a league match on 24th September 1892. This was when United was known as Newton Heath, and they were beaten 6-0 by the Toffees that day. In 211 meetings, it is the Red Devils with the superior record of 93 wins compared to the Toffees’ 71. There have been 47 draws between these two clubs.
The most recent match to have taken place between these two teams took place in the Premier League on 8th April 2023, where Manchester United were able to beat Everton 2-0 at Old Trafford.
