Sean Dyche’s Everton is set to welcome a Spurs side led by new Head Coach Ange Postecoglu to Goodison Park in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Toffees have safety in their sights and will want to distance themselves from danger this time. Meanwhile, the Lilywhites will look for a top-four and Champions League return this term.
In January 2022, Frank Lampard was appointed Rafa Benitez’s replacement at Everton. The former Chelsea, West Ham, and Manchester City midfielder guided the Toffees to Premier League safety with one match remaining after a fantastic comeback that resulted in a 3-2 win against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park.
However, Everton had only collected 15 points by January and sat 19th in the Premier League table. Sean Dyche succeeded Lampard on 30th January 2023. Dyche won his first game in charge of the club, beating Arsenal 1-0, with the Gunners top of the table at the time. James Tarkowski, who played for Sean Dyche at Burnley, scored the all-important goal with half an hour of the match remaining (60′).
Later that season, there was also a very impressive victory away against high-flying Brighton, with the Toffees securing what was an emphatic 5-1 win. Abdoulaye Doucouré (1′, 29′), Dwight McNeil (76′, 90+6′) and an own goal from Seagulls’ keeper Jason Steele secured the victory (35′).
It was a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on the final day of the 2022/23 season that prevented Everton from being relegated from the Premier League for the first time. Abdoulaye Doucouré scored the game’s only goal with just over half an hour remaining (57′).
Dwight McNeil’s 7 Premier League goals were the most of any Toffees player, with Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray scoring 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
Following Antonio Conte’s dismissal in March 2023, Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason took over in two separate interim spells for the remainder of last season, which saw the Spurs finish in 8th place, missing out on European football by just a point, with Aston Villa taking the final European spot in 7th place after a victory against Brighton on the last day. Spurs had beaten Leeds 4-1, but the results did not go their way.
Meanwhile, in Scotland, Celtic had just come off the back of another trophy filled season under the stewardship of their Australian Head Coach, Ange Postecoglu. Postecoglu, before taking over at Spurs in June 2023, had won 5 trophies in two years in Glasgow: 2 Scottish Premiership titles (2021/22 & 2022/23), 1 Scottish Cup (2022/23) and 2 Scottish League Cups (2021/22 & 2022/23).
The Bhoys were again the dominant force in the Scottish Premiership last term, accumulating 99 points from their 38 matches, winning 32 of them. Celtic scored the most goals with 114, 21 more than Rangers, with the next best record of 93. The Hoops also had the best defensive record, only conceding on 34 occasions.
With 30 goals, Harry Kane was Spurs’ leading Premier League scorer last term, with only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland scoring more in the top flight (36). Heung-Min Son came second in the club’s scoring charts with 11 goals.
Everton met Spurs for the very first time in a competitive fixture on 6th February 1904 in the 1st Round of the FA Cup at Goodison Park. The two clubs have met on 186 occasions, with the North London club having the most wins with 70 compared to the Toffees’ 57. There have been 59 draws overall.
The most recent match to have been played between these two teams took place in the Premier League on 3rd April 2023, where Everton and Spurs drew 1-1 at Goodison Park. Michael Kean’s spectacular strike from a considerable distance secured a point for the Toffees (90′) after Harry Kane had given the away side the lead from the penalty spot (68′).
