Everton are set to welcome West Ham United to Goodison Park in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Sean Dyche is set for his first full season with the Toffees, and he will hope to lead his team to survival, but by a more comfortable margin than last term, with the club looking to climb the table. Meanwhile, David Moyes’ Hammers will be pushing for the top half and to be in the conversation for European football again.
Following a fantastic comeback win against Crystal Palace, who they beat 3-2 after coming from 2-0 down at Goodison Park. Frank Lampard had been able to guide Everton to safety with one game to go following his appointment in January 2022, replacing Rafa Benitez. After a disappointing start to last season (2022/23), he was dismissed in favour of Sean Dyche on 30th January 2023, with the club 19th in the table.
Dyche turned the fortunes of the Toffees around, winning his first league game in charge against Arsenal, winning 1-0 against a Gunners side who were top of the league at the time. James Tarkowski got the winning goal (60’).
After an emphatic 5-1 win against Brighton, it was the 1-0 win against Bournemouth on the final day of the 2022/23 season at Goodison Park. This prevented Everton from their first-ever Premier League relegation, with the goal coming from Abdoulaye Doucouré, who gave goalkeeper Mark Travers no chance (57’).
With seven goals, Dwight McNeil was Everton’s leading Premier League goal scorer, ahead of Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray, who got 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
On 29th December 2019, David Moyes began his second stint as West Ham United Head Coach, succeeding Manuel Pellegrini, who was dismissed the day earlier. By the end of that season (2019/20), the Hammers finished in 16th place with 39 points.
2021/22 was Moyes’ first full season in his second spell in charge, and it was a spectacular one which saw West Ham finish 6th with 54 points, just 2 points off a Champions League spot. This top-six finish saw the Hammers secure Europa League football for the following season. Moyes’ side got to the semi-final, losing 3-1 to German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt on aggregate over two legs.
In the Premier League, West Ham United finished in 7th place at the conclusion of the 2021/22 season, securing themselves a spot in the Europa Conference League for the following season. It was a disappointing 14th-place finish in the 2022/23 season. Still, it was a historic one for the club, winning the Conference League after beating Italian side Fiorentina 2-1 in the final in Prague. This was the club’s first European silverware since beating German side 1860 Munich 2-0 in 1965 thanks to two Alan Sealey goals (70’, 72’).
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the joint top goal scorers for West Ham last season, scoring six goals each. Michail Antonio came a close second with five goals, whilst Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá got on the scoresheet four times each.
Everton and West Ham United met competitively for the first time on 2nd February 1907 in an FA Cup 2nd Round tie at Upton Park, winning 2-1 with Jimmy Settle and Jack Sharpe scoring the goals for the away side. Out of their 149 meetings, it is the Toffees with the most wins, with 74 compared to 31 for the Hammers. There have been 31 draws between these two clubs overall.
The two teams met most recently in the Premier League on 21st January 2023, where West Ham got the better of Everton, winning 2-0 at the London Stadium.
