David Moyes and his Everton team are set to face Graham Potter’s West Ham United at Goodison Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season.
With sights set on avoiding relegation, victory would see the Toffees take a step closer to this goal while increasing their chances of avoiding relegation by an even more significant margin than last season.
Goodison Park is one of the oldest and most historic football grounds in the country, and it has been the home of Everton Football Club since they moved there from Anfield in 1892. The Blues are now set to move to their new 52,888-capacity stadium ahead of the start of the 2025/26 season, so they will aim to make their last-ever season playing at Goodison Park as memorable as possible.
David Moyes ended the period of no less than 12 years away from the Everton dugout when his appointment was finally confirmed on 11th January 2025, where he was to succeed Sean Dyche at Goodison Park. His original spell in charge was very successful and fondly remembered by Toffees fans across the world, so the Scot will be looking to make his second spell in charge of the Merseyside Club as memorable as this first, which spanned 9 years from 2002 to his departure for Manchester United in 2013, where he succeeded United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
Moyes led the Everton to a place in the highly prestigious UEFA Champions League in the 2004/05 season, whilst also qualifying for the UEFA Cup (now the UEFA Europa League) on two occasions in total, ending the 2006/07 season with a 6th place finish before going on to end the 2007/08 campaign in 5th. In the former, Everton reached the last sixteen where they were defeated by Italian Serie A side Fiorentina.
In between his two stints at Everton, the Scot managed the likes of Manchester United (2013 – 2014), Real Sociedad (2014 – 2015), Sunderland (2016 – 2017), and West Ham United (2017 – 2018 & 2019 – 2024).
David Moyes predecessor, Sean Dyche, took charge back on 30th January 2023. Everton were able to retain their status as an ever-present Premier League side by the end of 2022/23, finishing 17th with 36 points, avoiding relegation by a margin of just 2 points. By the time that the 2023/24 campaign had concluded, they had managed to stay up more comfortably despite all of the points deductions that they suffered over the course of last year.
Moving on to West Ham, their English Head Coach, Graham Potter, took charge following the departure of his predecessor Julen Lopetegui, with the Englishman’s appointment being announced back on Thursday 9th January 2025. Lopetegui had departed the club after just one year at the helm, joining back on Tuesday 23rd May 2024, before his departure the day before the appointment of Potter on Wednesday 8th January 2025.
Potter had previously had successful stints with the likes of Ostersund (2011 – 2018), Swansea City (2018 – 2019) and Brighton & Hove Albion (2019 – 2022). He also spent time in charge of one of West Ham United’s London rivals Chelsea from 2022 to 2023.
Last season, the Hammers exited at the Round of 16 Stage of the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League, losing 3 – 1 on aggregate over the two legs against the now reigning German Bundesliga Champions—Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen. They also finished 9th in the league with a total of 52 points to their name before Moyes’s departure.
These two clubs have gone head to head in a competitive fixture on 151 occasions, and the Toffees have the superior record of 75 wins compared with the Hammers’ total of 45 to date, as of the time of writing. There have been 31 draws between these two teams so far.
Everton and West Ham will go toe-to-toe at Goodison Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. This game is set to be enthralling and highly competitive, with a brilliant atmosphere to boot.
