Everton and Wolves are set to go head to head at Goodison Park in the 2023/24 Premier League season. This will be manager Sean Dyche’s first full season in charge of Everton, and he will be hoping to lead his team on a climb up the table while avoiding relegation more comfortably. As for Wolves, Gary O’Neil will have ambitions of a top-half finish for his team.
Following the dismissal of Rafa Benitez, Frank Lampard was chosen as the Spaniard’s permanent successor at Goodison Park in January 2022 with the task of securing the Toffees’ Premier League survival. And, with a game left, Everton’s top-flight status was confirmed with one game to go with a 3-2 win against Crystal Palace.
But with the team in 19th place with 15 points, Lampard was dismissed, with Sean Dyche named as his permanent successor in January 2023. The former Burnley boss managed to turn the Toffees’ fortunes around, beating Arsenal 1-0 in his first game in charge before going on to beat Brighton 5-1 before securing Premier League safety with a 1-0 win against Bournemouth on the final day at Goodison. The crucial goal was a spectacular strike from Abdoulaye Doucouré, who gave goalkeeper Mark Travers no chance (57’).
Dwight McNeil, Everton’s leading Premier League goal scorer last term, got 7 in the top flight, just ahead of Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray, who got 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
Bruno Lage was dismissed as Wolves Head Coach in October 2022 before Julen Lopetegui, formerly of Sevilla and Real Madrid, took charge a month later. The Spaniard managed to guide the club away from relegation trouble to a respectable 13th-place finish in 2022/23 with 41 points, seven clear of the drop.
The start of the 2023/24 Premier League season saw Julen Lopetegui leave the club, and Gary O’Neil has been appointed to be the Spaniard’s permanent successor at Molineux. O’Neil is one of the youngest managers in the league and he was most recently in charge of Bournemouth where he became Scott Parker’s permanent successor in November 2022 after a period as caretaker boss.
Once the 2022/23 season had come to an end, Gary O’Neil left the club despite a 15th place finish which saw Bournemouth end the campaign 5 points clear of the drop.
Daniel Podence and Rúben Neves were Wolves’ joint top goal scorers last season with six goals each. Hwang Hee-Chan came second with three goals, whilst summer signing Matheus Cunha and Adama Traoré got two each.
Everton and Wolves met competitively for the first time on 26th January 1889 in a league match. Out of their 140 meetings to date, it is the Toffees with the superior record of 63 wins compared to Wolves’ 49. There have been 28 draws between these two clubs overall.
20th May 2023 saw the most recent match between Everton and Wolves occur, where the two teams drew 1-1 in the Premier League at Molineux. Yerry Mina scored a very late equaliser (90+9’) after forward Hwang Hee-Chan had given the home team the lead just after the half-hour mark (34’).
