This season, Arne Slot’s Liverpool are looking to defend their title and finish at the summit of the English Top Flight for the second season running, and victory against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa at Anfield would most certainly help them to do so. This game will be taking place on Merseyside during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
Three points will be seen as vital for the Reds, who aim to build momentum for their latest title challenge, as they seek to win the top-flight title for the 21st time in their illustrious history. This would see them break a record, standing at 20, that they currently jointly hold with their fierce rivals, Manchester United.
Current Boss Arne Slot has been in charge since the Dutchman was officially appointed on 20th May 2024, with him taking charge officially a short time after that on 1st June 2024, succeeding club legend Jürgen Klopp in the Anfield hot seat. The 2024/25 campaign was Slot’s first full season in charge, and his side won the title on 84 points, ultimately finishing no less than 10 points clear of their nearest rivals Arsenal, who finished as runners-up in second place on a total of 74 points in the end.
Liverpool picked up some very crucial results last season, which included wins for the Reds against the likes of Manchester United (3 – 0), Chelsea (2 – 1), Manchester City (2 – 0),  Newcastle United (2 – 0), Everton (1 – 0), and finally Spurs (3 – 6 & 5 – 1). The 5 – 1 win against Tottenham late on in the season is the result that officially confirmed that Liverpool had secured the title.
Moving on to Aston Villa, their Head Coach Unai Emery has been in charge since his appointment back in November 2022, where he became the successor to Steven Gerrard. By the end of his first few months in charge, he had led Villa to a very creditable 7th place finish to secure qualification for the UEFA Conference League after ending up with 61 points after having been in relegation trouble earlier on in the campaign.
In the 2023/24 campaign, Emery’s first full season in charge, they got all the way to the Semi Finals of the UEFA Conference League, where they were knocked out 6 – 2 on aggregate over the two legs by the eventual winners Olympiacos. In the Premier League, they finished in 4th place with 68 points in total, which was enough for them to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Then last season, they had another tremendous season in all competitions, finishing in 6th place in the 2024/25 Premier League with 66 points. Whilst they did miss out on Champions League football, they had the consolation of securing a place in the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League instead.
In last season’s Champions League, the West Midlands outfit got all the way to the Quarter Finals, where they were then eventually knocked out 5 – 4 on aggregate by the eventual winners PSG over the two legs.
The last time that these two clubs met in a competitive fixture was at Villa Park in what was a 2 – 2 draw in B6 back on 19th February 2025. Mohamed Salah (29’) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (61’) were both of the goal scorers for the Reds side, whilst it was Youri Tielemans (38’) and Ollie Watkins (45+3’) who scored the goals for the home side on that day.
Overall, Liverpool and Aston Villa have met in a competitive fixture no less than 205 times, and it is the Reds who have a superior record of 103 wins compared with Villa’s record of 59 to date, as of the time of writing. There have also been a total of 43 draws between these two teams as well.
