Arne Slot is set to lead his Liverpool team into what is going to be a crucial game against a newly promoted Leeds United outfit who are led by their German Head Coach Daniel Farke on Merseyside at the iconic and historic Anfield, with this match set to take place during the 2025/26 Premier League season. It will be a big season for Liverpool, who will be looking to get their hands on a 21st top-flight title, and on the three points that will take them a step closer to doing that.
Over the past few years, the Reds have been well-renowned for their ruthlessness, consistency, and strong form. What is also very important for any title bid is momentum, and this is certainly something that can be gained with a victory against Leeds here as they look to become the club with the most top-flight titles in the entire history of English Football.
Together with Manchester United, Liverpool are currently the joint record holders with 20 top-flight titles each in the English top flight. As mentioned previously, another title win would take the Reds to 21, which would see them make history under current boss Arne Slot, who looks to build a lasting legacy, just like his German predecessor.
The aforementioned Arne Slot has been in charge of Liverpool as Head Coach since his tenure at the Anfield club began on 1st June 2024, when he officially took over from club legend Jürgen Klopp. Klopp had announced his departure a long time before that and had left at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Therefore, the 2024/25 season in all competitions was his first full campaign in charge of the club, and he was able to bring significant success to the Reds and its fans, with the Dutchman delivering what is a second Premier League title for the club after leading his side to earn a points total of no less than 84 points, which was 10 more than the runners-up, Arsenal, who came up with 74 points in the end from their 38 games.
Of all the essential victories that Liverpool achieved last season, the one that will stand out the most for any fan will be the emphatic and fully deserved 5–1 triumph against North London counterparts Tottenham Hotspur. The goals on the day came courtesy of the likes of Luis Diaz (16’), Alexis Mac Allister (24’), Cody Gakpo (34’), and Mohamed Salah (63’). There was also an own goal scored by Spurs left-back Destiny Udogie (69’).
Moving on to Leeds United, they have just returned to the English top flight after a two-year absence, thanks to the stewardship of their current Head Coach, Daniel Farke, who has been at the Yorkshire football club since his arrival on 4th July 2023.
In the 2023/24 season, they failed to seal promotion under the German, with them losing 1 – 0 to Southampton in the 2024 EFL Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley thanks to a winning goal from Adam Armstrong at the midway point of the first half (24’).
Then in the 2024/25 EFL Championship campaign, Farke’s side proved that they did not need the promotion play-offs in the end, with Leeds getting automatically promoted back to the Premier League after beating Burnley to top spot and the title on goal difference, with both clubs having accumulated a grand total of no less than 100 points from their 46 matches each in the English Second Tier.
The last time that these two clubs met competitively in all competitions was in the Premier League at Elland Road all the way back on 17th April 2023. This was a game that saw the likes of Cody Gakpo (35’), Mohamed Salah (39’, 64’), Diogo Jota (52’, 73’), and Darwin Nunez (90’) find the back of the net for Liverpool, whilst it was Luis Sinisterra who was the scorer of the only goal for the hosts Leeds that day (47’).
Overall, Liverpool and Leeds United have met in a competitive game in all competitions on a total of 123 occasions, and it is the Reds who hold the superior record, with 63 victories compared to Leeds’ current total of 29, as of the time of writing. There have also been just 31 draws between these two clubs so far.
