An intense and long-standing rivalry will be renewed once again when Liverpool and Manchester United go head to head at Anfield in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Champions League qualification will be a target for both clubs, who will also hold ambitions of challenging current champions Manchester City for the Premier League title.
In October 2015, Brendan Rodgers was dismissed as manager, and he was succeeded by German Head Coach Jürgen Klopp, who had just left Borussia Dortmund following a trophy-filled career at Der BVB. Whilst in charge of the club, Klopp won 2 Bundesliga titles (2010/11 & 2011/12) and the DFB Pokal in the 2011/12 season. His Dortmund side also came close to winning the Champions League but lost 2-1 in the Champions League Final against rivals Bayern Munich at Wembley in May 2013.
The German’s habit of winning major trophies has carried on ever since he joined Liverpool as Head Coach. Over his almost 10 years in charge at the club, Klopp has won: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2018/19), UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
The 2022/23 season was Klopp’s most recent one at the club, and when Liverpool’s form picked up in February, they only lost twice in 15 matches to end up finishing in 5th place with 67 points, earning themselves a spot in this season’s Europa League. Of the Reds’ 75 goals (3rd best in the league), top scorer Mohamed Salah scored 19 times in 38 games, with fellow forward Roberto Firmino coming 2nd in Liverpool’s scoring charts with 11 in all to his name.
Jürgen Klopp was awarded the freedom of the city of Liverpool in recognition of his success at the Anfield club on 2nd November 2022.
Erik Ten Hag left Dutch Giants Ajax to join Manchester United as their latest Head Coach in April 2022, ahead of the start of the 2022/23 Premier League season. It was a solid first season for Ten Hag with the Red Devils, securing a spot in the Champions League this season after a 3rd place finish in the Premier League, accumulating 75 points in all.
Marcus Rashford was the leading goal scorer for the Red Devils last season with 17 goals. Bruno Fernandes was 2nd with 8, whilst Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho got 6 goals each.
Liverpool and Manchester United are, of course, rivals, with the two clubs meeting for the very first time in April 1894, where the Reds won 2-0. Overall, they have faced each other 239 times over the years and it is the Red Devils with a superior record of 90 wins as opposed to the Reds’ 81. There have been 68 draws in this fixture at the time of writing.
The most recent match between these two teams took place on 5th March 2023 when Liverpool beat United 7-0 in a Premier League match at Anfield. Cody Gakpo (43’, 50’), Darwin Núñez (47’, 75’), Mohamed Salah (66’, 83’) and Roberto Firmino (88’) all scored in an emphatic win for the home side that day.
