Wolves will make the trip to the Red side of Stanley Park when they come face to face with a Liverpool side led by Jürgen Klopp at Anfield in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Champions League football and a challenge for the Premier League title is very much on the cards for Liverpool this season, whilst Gary O’Neil’s Wolves will look to improve on last season, where they finished in the bottom half of the table.
Jürgen Klopp has been Liverpool’s Head Coach ever since he replaced Brendan Rodgers in the Reds’ hot seat in October 2015. Klopp had just left Borussia Dortmund, where he won 2 Bundesliga titles (2010/11 & 2011/12) and a DFB Pokal (2011/12) during his 7-year tenure at the club.
This is almost 10 years ago now, and in this time, the German has built a strong legacy at Anfield. During his time at the Reds, Klopp has won a plethora of honours, including a first-ever Premier League title for Liverpool. Other trophies won during his tenure at the club includes: 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 Champions League title (2018/19), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
In November 2022, Jürgen Klopp was awarded the freedom of the city of Liverpool for his achievements during his time with the club.
In February 2023, the Reds entered a rich vein of form that saw them win 10 and only lose 2 of their final 15 Premier League matches of the 2022/23 season. This saw them finish in 5th place with 67 points which saw them secure Europa League football. They were also only 4 points adrift of Newcastle in the final Champions League spot in the top four.
A tally of 75 goals as a team saw Liverpool finish last season as the third-best goal-scoring team last term, only behind runners-up Arsenal (88) and Champions Manchester City (94). They, joint with Chelsea, had the joint 4th best defensive record in the division, with only 47 goals conceded throughout the 38-game season.
It was Mohamed Salah who scored the most Premier League goals for Liverpool last term, with 19 goals in all. Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino came 2nd with 11 whilst Darwin Núñez scored 9 goals, whilst Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota scored 7 goals each.
Bruno Lage was dismissed as Wolves’ Manager in October 2022 before Julen Lopetegui became the Portuguese’s permanent successor at Molineux on 14th November 2022. Wolves ended the 2022/23 Premier League season in 13th place with 41 points and a 7-point gap between themselves and the bottom three.
Julen Lopetegui did however leave the club very early on in the 2023/24 season before Gary O’Neil was named as the Spaniard’s permanent successor at Molineux. Following the departure of Scott Parker, O’Neil spent a period as Bournemouth’s caretaker manager before being named as Parker’s permanent successor in November 2022 after an upturn in form.
However, come the end of the 2022/23 season, O’Neil left the club despite leading the Cherries to a 15th place finish in the Premier League table with 5 points separating them and the relegation zone.
Daniel Podence and Rúben Neves were Wolves’ joint top goal scorers last season with 6 each. Hwang Hee-Chan came a close second place with 3 goals. Summer signing Matheus Cunha and Adama Traoré got 2 goals each for the West Midlands club.
Liverpool and Wolves met for the very first time in a league match on 29th September 1894 at Molineux. Overall, the two clubs have met on 114 occasions, with the Reds having the most wins with 59 wins in comparison to Wolves’ 37. There have been 18 draws in total in this fixture.
The most recent match between these two teams took place on 1st March 2023 when Liverpool won 2-0 in a Premier League match at Anfield. Virgil Van Dijk (73’) and Mohamed Salah (77’) scored in the second half to give the home team a comfortable win.
