Manchester City are set to come face to face with newly promoted Burnley at the Etihad Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. This match will be made even more significant because the Clarets will be led by former City captain Vincent Kompany. Pep Guardiola’s side will have hopes of winning what would be a 4th consecutive Premier League title, whereas Kompany’s Clarets will be looking to secure a second successive season in the top flight.
Pep Guardiola has been Manchester City Head Coach for over half a decade now and the Spaniard has won a plethora of trophies, including a maiden UEFA Champions League title for the Cityzens after beating Italian heavyweights Inter Milan 1-0 in the 2023 Final in Istanbul. Guardiola has led the club to a number of other trophies: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21) and 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019).
Following the departure of Manuel Pellegrini, Guardiola was named as the Chilean’s successor at the Etihad Stadium on 1st February 2016. Following the 2023 Champions League win, City completed what was a historic treble.
Manchester City were in an intense Premier League title race with Arsenal for the majority of last season (2022/23), but it was of course City who triumphed over the Gunners in the end, winning their third successive Premier League title after accumulating 89 points, 5 ahead of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. Of City’s 94 goals (the most in the league) summer signing Erling Haaland scored the most goals with 36, securing the Norwegian forward the Premier League golden boot.
Phil Foden came second in Manchester City’s goal scoring charts with 11, whilst Julián Álvarez and Ilkay Gündogan got 9 and 8 goals respectively.
City and Newcastle had the joint best defence in the Premier League last term, with both sides only conceding 33 times in their 38 games.
Following Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League in the 2021/22 season, Vincent Kompany succeeded Sean Dyche at Turf Moor on 14th June 2022. Kompany’s Clarets were the outstanding side in the Championship last term, winning 29 of their 46 matches and accumulating 101 points in total. Burnley won the league title and they finished the season 10 points clear of Sheffield United in 2nd place, who got 91 points.
Nathan Tella was Burnley’s leading goal scorer with 17, whilst Manuel Benson was just behind him with 12 goals. Jay Rodriguez scored the third most goals for the Clarets last season with 10.
Manchester City and Burnley played against each other for the very first time on 30th October 1897 in a league match. Overall, the two clubs have met a total of 110 times over the years at the time of writing, and it is the Cityzens with the best record of 55 wins in comparison to the Clarets’ 30. There have been 25 draws in this fixtures in total.
The most recent match between these two clubs took place in an FA Cup Quarter Final tie at the Etihad Stadium where Manchester City were emphatic 6-0 winners against Burnley. Erling Haaland (32’, 35’, 59’), Julián Álvarez (62’, 73’) and Cole Palmer (68’) all scored for City that day.
