Manchester City and Everton will meet once again at the Etihad Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Pep Guardiola will look to lead City to a historic 4th consecutive Premier League title, whilst Sean Dyche’s Everton will want to avoid relegation to the Championship more comfortably than they did last season.
Guardiola’s City side were in ruthless form as ever in front of goal last season, scoring the most goals of any club in the league with 94 – title rivals Arsenal had the next highest goal tally of 88. Erling Haaland scored 36 of the Cityzens’ goals making him the club and the Premier League’s leading goal scorer last season.
It was not just going forward where City were proficient – they were rock solid defensively, conceding just 33 goals in their 38 Premier League matches. This is the joint best record in the entire division alongside Newcastle United, who came in 4th place.
Overall, City won all but 10 of their Premier League matches, accumulating 89 points in total which saw them win the league and finish 5 points ahead of Arsenal who they had been battling for the title for much of the season. This was their third successive Premier League title, and they will be looking for their record-breaking 4th this term.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City completed a historic treble last season, winning the FA Cup, the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. City beat Italian heavyweights Inter Milan 1-0 in the final in Istanbul, courtesy of a second half goal from Spanish international midfielder Rodri (68’).
Since he succeeded Manuel Pellegrini in February 2016, Pep Guardiola has enjoyed a trophy filled career at Manchester City and has won more than 10 trophies as of the time of writing: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21) and 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019).
Following Frank Lampard’s dismissal on 23rd January 2023, former Burnley boss Sean Dyche was appointed as the former Chelsea midfielder’s successor at Goodison Park a week later. Dyche managed to record some notable victories such as a 1-0 success against Arsenal, but none was more notable than the 1-0 win against Bournemouth at Goodison Park on the final day of last season, which secured the Toffees’ Premier League survival. Everton finished in 17th with 36 points – 2 above the relegation zone.
Dwight McNeil was the top goal scorer for the Toffees last season with 7, whilst midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré came second in the Everton goal scoring charts with 5 to his name. Demarai Gray and Anthony Gordon (now with Newcastle United) got 4 and 3 goals each.
Manchester City and Everton met for the very first time in a competitive fixture on 23rd December 1899. The two clubs have met 195 times to date, with City having the most wins with 79 as opposed to the Toffees’ 68. There have been 48 draws in total between them in this fixture.
The most recent match to have taken place between these two teams came on 14th May 2023 where Manchester City won 3-0 at Goodison Park in the Premier League. İlkay Gündoğan (37’, 51’) and Erling Haaland (39’) found the back of the net for the away side that day.
