The Manchester Derby is coming to the Etihad Stadium when Manchester City and Manchester United come face to face in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Pep Guardiola’s City team will have ambitions of winning the league title for a record fourth time in succession, whereas a Red Devils side led by Erik Ten Hag will want to be in the title race themselves and secure their place in the Champions League once again.
There have been many a memorable Manchester Derby over the years where the tables have most certainly turned. One of the most memorable matches between these two rivals took place at Old Trafford in October 2011. Roberto Mancini’s City side came away with an emphatic 6-1 victory, courtesy of goals from Mario Balotelli, Sergio Agüero (69’), Edin Džeko (89’, 90+3’) and David Silva (90+1’). City of course went on to win the Premier League title that season (2011/12) after THAT dramatic Agüero goal against Queens Park Rangers on the final day.
Manchester City won a derby against United in emphatic fashion a few years before in September 1989. City won 5-1 at Maine Road with David Oldfield (2), Ian Bishop, Andrew Hinchcliffe and Trevor Morley all on the scoresheet.
Pep Guardiola became Manchester City manager in February 2016, and has led the Cityzens to a great number of major trophies: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019) and 1 UEFA Champions League (2022/23).
City’s UEFA Champions League win not only formed one third of a treble, it was also a historic moment for the club as this was the first time that the club had won this trophy in its more than 140 year history. The Cityzens beat Italian Giants Inter Milan in Istanbul, with a goals from Spain’s Rodri (68’) sealing a 1-0 win in what was a tight and tense occasion.
Last season (2022/23), Manchester City were of course Premier League Champions after winning 28 of their 38 league games and accumulating 89 points in total – 5 more than Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who finished as runners-up.
City scored the most goals with 94, whilst having the joint best defence alongside Newcastle United, only conceding 33 goals.
Erik Ten Hag took over at Manchester United ahead of the start of the 2022/23 Premier League season. The ex-Ajax Head Coach turned the Red Devils’ fortunes around and guided them to a 3rd place finish in the Premier League with 75 points whilst also securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
With 17 goals, Marcus Rashford was Manchester United’s top scorer in the Premier League last season, followed by Bruno Fernandes with 8 goals to his name. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho got 6 goals each.
Manchester City and Manchester United met for the very first time on 3rd October 1891 in what was an FA Cup 1st qualifying round tie. Overall, the two Manchester rivals have met on 190 occasions with the Red Devils having the most wins with 78 goals in comparison to the Cityzens’ 59. There have been 53 draws between these two teams.
The most recent match to be played between these two clubs took place on 3rd June 2023 at Wembley in what was the 2023 FA Cup final under the arch. It was Manchester City who won the game and the FA Cup trophy after İlkay Gündoğan (1’ & 51’) and Bruno Fernandes (33’ – Penalty) scored for their respective teams.
