The Manchester Derby is one of the most intense and competitive in English and global football, and this iconic rivalry between Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United is set to renew once more at the Etihad Stadium in the 2024/25 Premier League season. The Cityzens will be looking for local bragging rights, as well as three points, as they look to realise their ambition of retaining the title once again.
No less than a combined 21 trophies were won by Guardiola before joining City. Between the years of 2008 and 2016, the Spaniard was in charge of Spanish Giants FC Barcelona and German Bundesliga heavyweights FC Bayern Munich. This includes a 6 trophy haul in one single season with Barcelona back in the 2008/09 season.
He has not slowed down now he is at City, and since he was appointed as successor to Manuel Pellegrini ahead of the 2016/17 season, he has won no less than 17 major trophies to date as of the time of writing. These trophies are as follows: 6 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23 & 2023/24), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 League Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 FA Community Shields (2018 & 2019), 1 UEFA Champions League (2022/23), 1 UEFA Super Cup (2023) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2023).
Also, Manchester City have finished with a points total of more than 90 points four times since Pep Guardiola took over. In the 2018/19 season, his side became the Premier League’s first ever ‘Centurions’ after winning a total of no less than 100 points from their 38 matches that year.
Last season, City won a historic 4th consecutive top flight title, amassing a total of 91 points to finish 2 points ahead of their closest title rivals in the form of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
Moving on to Manchester United, Ruben Amorim was appointed as Manager of the Red Devils on 1st November 2024. The 2022/23 campaign was his predecessor Erik Ten Hag’s inaugural campaign at the club. At the end of his first season, Ten Hag’s United had beaten Newcastle United 2 – 0 at Wembley to win that season’s Carabao Cup whilst also accumulating a total of 75 points to finish 3rd in the Premier League in order to qualify for the following season’s UEFA Champions League.
Last season, 2023/24, United were knocked out at the Group Stages of the UEFA Champions League, whilst also finishing in 8th place in the Premier League with a total of 60 points to their name. They did though secure their place in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League thanks to a 2 – 1 win against City in the 2024 FA Cup Final.
There have been a number of iconic clashes in all competitions between these two Manchester rivals. One that will come to mind for City fans across the world will be a contest that took place on 23rd October 2011 at Old Trafford. It was a derby humiliation, with the Cityzens winning 6 – 1 thanks to goals from Mario Balotelli (22’, 60’), Sergio Aguero (69’), Edin Dzeko (89’, 90+3’), and David Silva (90+1’). Darren Fletcher was the only goal scorer for the Red Devils (81’).
These two Manchester clubs have gone face to face in all competitions on a total of 193 occasions to date, and, as of the time of writing, it is the Red Devils who have the superior record of 79 victories compared to the Cityzens’ total of 61. There have been 53 draws between these two teams so far.
