Manchester City are set to face South London counterparts Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Pep Guardiola’s City side will look to follow up last season’s title success with a third successive Premier League title win this season whilst Crystal Palace have realistic ambitions of a top half finish.
After a successful 3 year stint in charge at Manchester City, Manuel Pellegrini left the club before being succeeded by Pep Guardiola in February 2016. After he enjoyed great success at two of Europe’s biggest clubs, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Guardiola has not disappointed at Manchester City where he has continued his good habit of winning major trophies: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21) and 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019).
On Saturday 10th June 2023, Guardiola’s City side won the club’s maiden UEFA Champions League title in the final in Istanbul against Italian heavyweights Inter Milan, who they were able to beat 1-0 via a Rodri goal in the second half (68’). This completed the historic treble. This can be argued as Pep’s crowing achievement in his 7 year tenure at the club so far.
Last term, Manchester City were able to beat Arsenal in what was a very competitive title race, winning the Premier League for the third successive season after finishing their campaign with 89 points from 38 games. City were 5 clear of the Gunners at the end of the 2022/23 season.
Manchester City scored the most goals with 94 (6 more than Arsenal), and conceded the joint least goals alongside Newcastle United – 33.
Erling Haaland won the golden boot and became City’s leading goal scorer last season with 36 goals in his 38 matches. Phil Foden came second in Manchester City’s scoring charts with 11, whilst Julián Álvarez and Ilkay Gündogan got 9 and 8 goals respectively.
Patrick Vieira was dismissed by Crystal Palace on 17th March 2023 before Roy Hodgson returned to the Eagles as their manager for the final few weeks of the 2022/23 Premier League season. Hodgson guided the club to an 11th place finish with 45 points – a very comfortable 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
Eberechi Eze led Palace’s goal scoring charts last term with 10 goals in total. Wilfried Zaha and Odsonne Édouard were not find behind the England international, scoring 7 and 5 goals respectively.
Manchester City and Crystal Palace played against each other in a competitive fixture for the very first time on 8th January 1921 in an FA Cup 1st Round tie. Overall, the two clubs have met on a total of 69 times over the years and it is City with the superior record of 37 wins in comparison to the Eagles’ 17. There have been 15 draws between them at the time of writing.
The most recent match to have taken place between these two teams took place on 11th March 2023 at Selhurst Park in the Premier League, when City emerged as 1-0 winners in South London thanks to an Erling Haaland goal from the penalty spot late on in the second half (78’).
