Manchester City, led by their Spanish Head Coach Pep Guardiola, are set to take on Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United side at the iconic Etihad Stadium located in the heart of the City of Manchester during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
A victory and the three points it provides could potentially prove crucial for City this season, as they could ultimately decide their fate in the end. Triumphing over the Magpies would see the Cityzens take what would be a vital step closer to realising their ambition this season, which is to get their hands on the top flight title once again.
The aforementioned Pep Guardiola is, of course, the current Head Coach of Manchester City Football Club, where he has been in charge since officially taking over ahead of the start of the 2016/17 Premier League season. He had succeeded his Chilean counterpart Manuel Pellegrini at the club, with confirmation of Pep’s appointment coming back on Monday 1st February 2016. Pellegrini then took charge of what remained of the 2015/16 campaign.
2024/25 was Pep Guardiola’s most recent full season in charge of Manchester City, and they did come into it as the reigning Premier League Champions to defend it once more. Unfortunately for the Cityzens, they were unable to do so, settling for a 3rd place finish in the end, which resulted from accumulating 71 points from their 38 games. Still, despite missing out on the title to Liverpool, they did at least qualify for the UEFA Champions League again for the 2025/26 campaign.
Throughout his City career to date, Pep Guardiola has led the club to no less than 18 trophies overall so far, as of the time of writing. So far, Pep’s Manchester City have won 6 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22/ 2022/23 & 2023/24), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 Carabao Cup titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 3 FA Community Shield titles (2018, 2019 & 2024), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2022/23), 1 UEFA Super Cup title (2023), and finally 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2023).
Moving on to Newcastle United, their English Head Coach Eddie Howe has been Magpies boss ever since he replaced Steve Bruce all the way back on Monday 8th November 2021. He led them to UEFA Champions League qualification for a significant amount of time in the 2022/23 season with a fourth place finish.
Howe’s side also went on to end the club’s 56 year wait for a trophy, which came when Newcastle were able to beat Arne Slot’s Liverpool 2 – 1 in the 2025 Carabao Cup Final thanks to goals from the likes of lifelong fan Dan Burn (45’) and their star striker Alexander Isak (52’) either side of half time. Federico Chiesa was officially the scorer of the only Liverpool goal of the game, with him finding the back of the Newcastle net deep into second half stoppage time (90+4’) at the iconic and historic Wembley Stadium.
In the Premier League last season (2024/25), Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United secured a return to European Club Football’s Premier Cup Competition with them qualifying for the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League thanks to what was a 5th place finish in the Premier League after accumulating a grand total of no less than 69 points from their 38 games last term. They only qualified on goal difference over Aston Villa in the end.
The last time that these two clubs faced each other competitively in all competitions was in the Premier League back on Saturday 15th February 2025 at the Etihad Stadium, where Manchester City was emphatic, ruthless, and well deserved 4 – 0 winners against Newcastle United, thanks to goals from the likes of Omar Marmoush (19’, 24’, 33’) and James McAtee (84’), with the former scoring an incredible hat-trick in this game.
Overall, Manchester City and Newcastle United have met competitively in all competitions on no less than 149 occasions, and it is City who currently have the superior record of as many as 79 victories in this fixture, compared with the Magpies’ total of 73 wins against the Cityzens so far. There have also been 42 draws between these clubs to date, as of the time of writing.
