Old Trafford is set to stage a match between Manchester United and Bournemouth once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils will want to be involved in this season’s title race, as well as ensuring that they qualify for Champions League football for the second successive season. As for the Cherries, they avoided an immediate return to the Championship last season.
Erik Ten Hag is amongst the most famous names in European football, and following his time in charge of Go Ahead Eagles (2012 – 2013), Bayern Munich II (2013 – 2015) and Utrecht (2015 – 2017), he succeeded Marcel Keizer was Head Coach of Dutch Giants Ajax. Whilst in charge, Ajax reached a Champions League Semi-Final in 2019, where they narrowly lost to Tottenham on away goals after the aggregate score was level at 3-3 following Spurs’ 3-2 win in the second leg.
Overall, the Dutchman won 6 trophies in Amsterdam: 3 Eredivisie titles (2018/19, 2020/21 & 2021/22), 2 KNVB Cups (2018/19 & 2020/21) and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2019.
Following Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick’s respective spells as interim Head Coach, Ten Hag became as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s permanent successor at Old Trafford on 21st April 2022. By the end of his first full season in charge (2022/23), he guided the Red Devils to a return to Champions League football, finishing 3rd whilst accumulating a total of 75 points.
The Red Devils finished 17 points better off and also no less than 3 places higher than they were by the end of the 2021/22 Premier League season.
Marcus Rashford scored a total of 17 league goals for United last season, making him the club’s top scorer. The forward was followed by Bruno Fernandes, who scored 8 goals. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho got 6 goals each.
Following Bournemouth’s heavy 9-0 Premier League defeat against Liverpool at Anfield, Scott Parker was succeeded by Gary O’Neil permanently in November 2022 after an initial interim spell in charge of the Cherries. O’Neil oversaw a significant improvement in the club’s fortunes, guiding them to a 15th-place finish with 39 points with a 5-point gap between themselves and the bottom three by the end of the 2022/23 Premier League season. However, Gary O’Neil was dismissed by the Cherries a few weeks after the season finished.
On 19th June 2023, Spanish Head Coach Andoni Iraola was announced as O’Neil’s successor at the Vitality Stadium. After his spells with AEK Larnaca (2018 – 2019) and Mirandes (2019 – 2020), Iraola is best known for his time with Madrid based LaLiga side Rayo Vallecano.
He joined Los Franjirrojos in August 2020, going on to lead Rayo Vallecano to promotion via the play-offs come the conclusion of the 2020/21 Segunda Division season. In the 2021/22 season, he led the club to just it’s second Copa del Rey semi-final appearance before leading them to an 11th-place finish in La Liga last season.
Philip Billing was Bournemouth’s leading goal scorer this season with 7, closely followed by Dominic Solanke, who got 6 goals to his name. Jefferson Lerma (now with Crystal Palace) and summer signing Marcus Tavernier got 5 goals each.
Manchester United and Bournemouth played against each other for the first time competitively on 8th January 1949 in an FA Cup 3rd Round tie where United were emphatic 6-0 winners at Maine Road. Overall, the Red Devils have won 14 of their 20 matches against each other, with the Cherries having 3 wins in this fixture. The two clubs have played out 3 draws in total at the time of writing.
The most recent match to take place between these two teams took place on 20th May 2023 at the Vitality Stadium, where Manchester United secured a 1-0 Premier League victory courtesy of a Casemiro goal in the first ten minutes of the match (9’).
