Manchester United v Spurs
Premier League 2023/24
Fixture Date – Sunday 14 January 2024
Kick-off – 4:30 pm
Old Trafford, Manchester
Manchester United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford for this 2023/24 Premier League fixture. Two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs will go head to head at Old Trafford when Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United and Spurs meet once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Red Devils will aim to not only qualify for the UEFA Champions League but also be in title contention this season. Spurs will be looking to return to European football this season under new Head Coach Ange Postecoglu. This fixture could be one of the 2023/24 Premier League (EPL) most competitive games for both clubs. Erik ten Hag pitches his skills against Spurs’ new manager Ange Postecoglou who had a brilliant record when he managed Celtic. With a preferred 4-3-3 attacking formation, Spurs will be fighting for all three points as they look to qualify for Champions League football next season. Will Postecoglou have enough in his locker to outwit Erik ten Hag?

Manchester United are set to welcome Spurs to Old Trafford once again when two of the Premier League and Europe’s biggest clubs play against each other once more in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Erik Ten Hag’s side will be looking to secure Champions League football for the second successive season as well as having the target of being involved in the title race this season as well. Under new Head Coach Ange Postecoglu, Tottenham Hotspur will look to return to European football after narrowly missing out last term.
Erik Ten Hag is a highly revered figure in European football, particularly for his work with Dutch Giants Ajax, whom he joined as Head Coach all the way back in 2017, succeeding Marcel Keizer. In 2019, he led the club to the Champions League Semi-Final, where they lost to Spurs on away goals after the two-legged tie ended in a 3-3 draw. They did record some impressive wins along the way though, beating Juventus 2-1 and Real Madrid 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Overall, during his 5-year stint in charge of Ajax, Erik Ten Hag won no less than 6 trophies in total: 3 Eredivisie titles (2018/19, 2020/21 & 2021/22), 2 KNVB Cups (2018/19 & 2020/21) and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2019.
Then, it was announced by Manchester United in April 2022 that Erik Ten Hag would be Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s permanent successor at Old Trafford following Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick’s respective spells with the Red Devils as interim managers.
In 2022/23, Ten Hag’s first full season in charge, the Dutch Head Coach guided the club to 3rd place and a 17-point improvement in the 2021/22 season after finishing in 3rd with 75 points. In the 2021/22 Premier League season, Manchester United had to settle for 6th place with 58 points.
Marcus Rashford, with 17 Premier League goals to his name, was Manchester United’s leading goal scorer in the league, followed by Bruno Fernandes with 8 goals. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho finished with 6 goals each.
Ange Postecoglu left Celtic when he was appointed as Antonio Conte’s successor at Tottenham Hotspur in June 2023. The Australian Head Coach’s appointment at the club followed Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason’s respective spells as interim Head Coach at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
He had just come from another successful season at Celtic which added to the vast number of trophies that he was able to win during his 2-year spell in Glasgow. In total, Ange Postecoglu won 5 trophies with the Hoops in total: 2 Scottish Premiership titles (2021/22 & 2022/23), 1 Scottish Cup (2022/23) and 2 Scottish League Cups (2021/22 & 2022/23).
Celtic were the dominant force in the Scottish Premiership last season, conceding the least amount of goals with 34, whilst also scoring by far and away the most amount of goals of any team in the league with 114 goals being scored by the Bhoys in total – 21 more than Rangers who had the second best total of 93. The Hoops also accumulated no less than 99 points from 38 matches.
As for Spurs, despite finishing with an emphatic 4-1 victory against Leeds United at Elland Road, they missed out on European Football by just one point, finishing in 8th place with 60 points. Villa took the final European spot in 7th with 61 points following a victory against high-flying Brighton at Villa Park on the final day of last season.
Harry Kane was Spurs’ top goal scorer with 36, whilst it was Heung-Min Son who came second in the club’s goal-scoring charts with 11 goals to his name.
Manchester United and Spurs first met on 28th January 1899. They have met on 199 occasions to date, with United having the most wins with 96 compared to the Lilywhites’ 53. There have been 50 draws at the time of writing.
Their most recent encounter came on 27th April 2023, where the two teams played out a 2-2 draw in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
