Spurs, who are led by their Danish Head Coach Thomas Frank, will be going toe to toe with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in the Third Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup at the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the heart of North London. Tottenham will be looking to get the better of the Villans as they look to take a step closer to the Final at Wembley in May 2026.
Both clubs have extensive histories in this competition, having won the FA Cup on several occasions.
If the Lilywhites go on and lift this historic trophy under the arch at Wembley Stadium this season, then it would be the ninth time in their illustrious history that they have done so. Their first-ever triumph in this competition came all the way back in the 1900/01 campaign, when they were 3–1 winners against Sheffield United in a replay.
Their next triumph came in 1921, they were able to beat Wolves 1 – 0 at Stamford Bridge, before then going on to lift the FA Cup for a third time forty years later in 1961 where they were comfortable 2 – 0 winners at Wembley against Leicester City following second half goals from the likes of Bobby Smith (66’) and Terry Dyson (75’).
Spurs then won it for the second season in a row in 1962, this time against Burnley, this time winning 3 – 1, with Bill Nicholson’s side scoring through the likes of Jimmy Greaves (3’), Bobby Smith (51’), and Danny Blanchflower (80’).
Further triumphs followed in 1967, when they beat rivals Chelsea 2 – 1, and in 1981, when they got the better of Manchester City 3 – 2 in a replay. Then, a year later in 1982, Tottenham defeated Queens Park Rangers 1 – 0 in another replay.
The most recent FA Cup Final triumph for Spurs came back in 1991, again at Wembley Stadium, where Terry Venables’ Tottenham Hotspur were able to beat Brian Clough and his Nottingham Forest side 2 – 1 thanks to a goal from Paul Stewart (55’) and an own goal at extra time by Des Walker (94’). Forest’s only goal of the game came from Stuart Pearce, who initially gave his side the lead early on in the first half.
The triumphant Spurs side included Justin Edinburgh, Steve Sedgley, Gary Mabbutt, Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker, and Paul Allen.
Moving on to Aston Villa, they have won the FA Cup seven times in their history, with their first coming in the 1886/87 campaign, when they defeated local rivals West Brom 2 – 0 at the Kennington Oval in London. This was followed by a 1 – 0 win against the same opponents in 1895, where the Villa won thanks to an early goal from Bob Chatt (1’), with this final taking place at the Crystal Palace in the English Capital.
Villa’s third FA Cup triumph then arrived in 1897, where they were 3 – 2 winners against Everton at the aforementioned Crystal Palace. The Villans won through goals from Johnny Campbell (18’), Fred Wheldon (35’), and Jimmy Crabtree (44’).
The Villans then had final victories in this competition that followed in 1905, where they were 2 – 0 winners against Newcastle United, before beating the Magpies’ fierce local rivals Sunderland 1 – 0 through Tommy Barber’s goal in 1913 (78’), just a year before the start of World War One.
After the war, Villa beat Yorkshire counterparts Huddersfield Town 1 – 0 after extra time for their sixth FA Cup win, this time at Stamford Bridge in 1920.
Aston Villa’s most recent FA Cup triumph came back in 1957, when they were able to beat Manchester United 2 – 1 at the old Wembley Stadium thanks to goals from Peter McParland (68’, 73’), whilst the Red Devils scored their only goal through Tommy Taylor (83’).
Over the years, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa have faced each other a total of 13 times, most recently on 9th February 2025 at Villa Park, where Villa were 2 – 1 winners thanks to goals from the likes of Jacob Ramsey (1’) and Morgan Rogers (64’), whilst it was Mathys Tel who scored Spurs’ only goal in the second half stoppage time (90+1’).
Spurs have, though, been dominant, with 7 FA Cup wins against Villa compared with a total of 5 for their West Midlands counterparts.
All eyes will be on who will be victorious in this Third Round tie in the 2025/26 FA Cup at the aforementioned Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the Lilywhites looking to win some more silverware this season to follow their UEFA Europa League triumph last season.
