Match Review
The first opportunity of the game came within the first five minutes of the first half, and it was for Manchester United. Harry Maguire had a header fly toward the goal only for Destiny Udogie to clear the ball for a corner kick, which came to nothing in the end (5’).
Spurs soon came very close to having a great opportunity to score the opening goal of their own, with Noussair Mazraoui heading away a superb cross into the box from Pedro Porro. It was a cross that almost got to Richarlison after United stopper Andre Onana failed to get to the ball (10’).
Another couple of chances for Spurs then came for Tottenham just a couple of minutes later. Firstly, it was Brennan Johnson who forced a great save from Andre Onana before Pape Matar Sarr had a shot on goal of his own, only for his effort to be blocked well by the aforementioned Harry Maguire (12’).
Another chance then came just minutes before the half time whistle through United forward Amad Diallo who had an effort on goal held by Spurs ‘keeper Guglielmo Vicario after Spurs striker Richarlison managed to tackle Diallo as he took the shot, which made it easier for Tottenham’s Italian Goalkeeper to save (40’).
The deadlock did not remain for long, however, with the opening goal coming just a couple of minutes after this chance. Wales international forward Brennan Johnson found the bottom left corner of the United net after meeting a ball into the box from Pape Matar Sarr. His effort deflected off a despairing Luke Shaw and into the back of the net to give Spurs the all-important lead in this game going into the half time break (42’).
The half time break then went with Tottenham 45 minutes away from lifting their third UEFA Europa League title, and their first major trophy for 17 years. United were going into the second half looking to prevent Spurs from doing so and win the trophy for themselves.
The first chance of the half came the way of United’s Amad Diallo, but his shot on goal went wide of the goal and Spurs’ lead remained intact (48’).
The next big chance for either side came with just over twenty minutes of the game remaining plus stoppage time. It came for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United through their Danish international striker Rasmus Højlund – his header towards the goal was spectacularly cleared off the line thanks to what was a spectacular volley from Spurs’ Dutch defender Micky van de Ven (69’).
United did have another chance a few minutes later when the Red Devils’ Captain Bruno Fernandes had a header that went wide of the goal after he had successfully met a great cross into the box from defender Noussair Mazraoui (73’).
Then another chance came the way of the Red Devils, this time from their substitute Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine international forward was able to beat a defender successfully before getting his shot off, only for it to be saved well by Spurs stopper Guglielmo Vicario with 15 minutes left plus stoppage time (75’).
Spurs did manage to hold out for the rest of the game, and they got their hands on the UEFA Europa League title for 2025, their third in all, which sees them secure qualification for the highly coveted UEFA Champions League for next season.
Spurs Boss Ange Postecoglou did say previously that he always wins something in his second season, and he has most certainly delivered with this Europa League triumph in Bilbao.
What the Managers said
Following this match, which of course saw Spurs end their 17 year long wait for a major trophy, this is what both Ange Postecoglou and Ruben Amorim had to say following this high profile match in Bilbao, which saw Postecoglou’s Tottenham get their hands on such a prestigious trophy.
Ange Postecoglou (via Sky Sports): “I understand why it would be difficult for a club like this to buy into one person’s vision. I remember even when I signed, the club and even Daniel said, we went after winners, it didn’t work and now we’ve got Ange. But mate, I’m a winner.
“I have been a serial winner my whole career. It’s what I have done more than anything else. Obviously the way things have gone in the league, people are right to be concerned about, but I don’t think that’s a true reflection of where we are at.
“We’ve got a really young group of players and you can talk to them about success and what it means, but until they feel it, it doesn’t become real.
“I’ve got no doubt that all those boys – having this feeling – will want it again. To get it again they’re going to have to make similar sacrifices.
“They’ve climbed the mountain now. They know what it takes to get to where we are. I think that does, it accelerates the opportunities to build a team who can be successful and play at a high standard for years to come.
“As I said yesterday, I still feel there’s a lot of work to be done, I think that’s quite obvious, but not as much work as people may think.”
Ruben Amorim (via Manchester United Official Website): “We are obviously devastated with this loss. We lost one game in this competition, we didn’t win it in the last game. I think if you look at the whole game, we were the better team but if you don’t score goals you don’t win matches.
“The first half was a little bit tense. Possession for both teams was not long, we couldn’t keep the ball for so long, Tottenham were the same. A lot of second balls. But in the second half, we push, we push the opponent to near the box, we tried to cross, to create situations. In the end, they defend the goal they scored in the first half. In the second half, we tried everything but in the end it was not enough.
“Next (objective) is to develop the club but tonight is to just to deal with the pain and then we’ll have time to assess the season. We have one more game, we need to close this season and then think about the future.”
All eyes are now on the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season, with all matches on matchday 38 being played on the afternoon of Sunday 25th May 2025 with all games set to kick-off at 4pm. Spurs will be hosting Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, whilst Manchester United will be taking on Aston Villa at Old Trafford. The clubs will be hoping to end the season with a win.
