Cheltenham Christmas Meeting 2025 –  Cheltenham Racecourse – Private Grandstand Box

The Cheltenham Christmas Meeting (formerly International Meeting) is set to return to the iconic and historic Cheltenham Racecourse for two days of enthralling racing from Friday 12th to Saturday 13th December 2025. Across this enthralling and prestigious two day meeting, no less than fourteen races will be taking place, including the December Gold Cup, which is arguably the most prestigious race of them all.

Toss Taaffe was the first ever jockey to emerge victorious in the December Gold Cup, riding a Danny Morgan trained Limeking to victory all the way back in 1963. This was the first and final victory in this race for both Taaffe and Morgan.

The December Gold Cup began life as the Massey Ferguson Gold Cup, and it was known by this name until 1980. After several name changes, its name was changed to the Robin Cook Memorial Gold Cup in 2005. This name change was done in tribute to former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, who was a horse racing enthusiast.

Then, from 2006 to 2009, this Gold Cup was known as the Boylesports.com Gold Cup before another name change came in 2010. It was then to be known as the Vote A P Gold Cup for that year, with Tony McCoy being a candidate for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

It became the Atlantic 4 Gold Cup in 2011, then the Paul Stewart IronSpine Charity Challenge Gold Cup in 2012 and then the Stewart Family Thank You Gold Cup in 2013. Then, from 2014 to 2020, this race was known as the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup.

It was known as the Racing Post Gold Cup in 2021, and Virgin Bet has been the sponsor since 2023. As a result, the December Gold Cup is currently known as the Virgin Bet December Gold Cup for sponsorship reasons.

The winner of the race in 2023 was Fugitif, ridden by Gavin Sheehan and trained by Richard Hobson.

Then, in the most recent running of the December Gold Cup in 2024, it was Gemirande, trained by Venetia Williams, and ridden by Jockey Charlie Deutsch who came out on top in the end ahead of stern competition from runner-up Madara, who was ridden by Harry Skelton. It was the 2023 winner Fugitif who came in third place in the end.

Poquelin and Frodon are the most successful horses in this race, with two victories each. Poquelin won in 2009 and 2010, whilst Frodon emerged victorious back in 2016 and 2018.

In terms of jockeys, Richard Johnson holds the record for most wins with three. Johnson has won with Legal Right (1999), Monkerhostin (2004) and Village Vic (2015).

Paul Nicholls is the most successful trainer in the history of the December Gold Cup, with 5 wins in all. He has had wins with Poquelin (2009, 2010), Unioniste (2012) and Frodon (2016, 2018).
