Tingle Creek Festival: Looking Ahead

With the racing getting underway at Sandown in early December 2023, here we go through all you need to know.

The return of the prestigious Tingle Creek Festival is edging ever closer, and it will once again take place at the iconic Sandown Racecourse in December 2023. At this year’s festival, there will be 13 races taking place over two days that are sure to be full of world-class action for all in attendance to enjoy. The racing gets underway on Friday, 8th December before this year’s festival ends a day later on Saturday, 9th December 2023.

This festival is widely seen as an early indicator for the upcoming Cheltenham Festival, which begins on Tuesday 12th March 2024.

On Day One, there are six races, starting with the Daily Tips On Betting.Betfair Juvenile Hurdle Race at 12:40 before the action on the opening day concludes with the Betfair Racing…Only Bettor Podcast Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at 15:35 on the Friday.

As for the second and final day of racing at the 2023 Tingle Creek Festival, seven races will take to the track at Sandown. The racing gets underway with the Betfair Weighed In Podcast Claremont Novices’ Hurdle Race at 12:05 before this year’s event concludes for another year with the Betfair Exchange London National Handicap Steeple Chase that gets underway at 15:35 on the afternoon of Saturday, 9th December 2023.

All the races are hotly anticipated, but there are a few races that stand out in particular. There is the Grade Two Winter Novices’ Hurdle on Friday, with the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase and The Betfair Tingle Creek Chase taking place on the Saturday.

Here, we will take a look at all of the 13 races that are set to take place at this year’s Tingle Creek Festival at Sandown Racecourse in December 2023.

The Daily Tips On Betting.Betfair Juvenile Hurdle Race (Friday 8th, 12:40)

The opening race on the first day of the 2023 Tingle Creek Festival is set to be the Daily Tips On Betting.Betfair Juvenile Hurdle Race. The most recent running of this particular race in 2022 saw jockey Charlie Price ride Penna Rossa to victory ahead of competition from Havaila and Non Stop.

The Best Odds On Betfair Exchange Handicap Steeple Chase (Friday 8th, 13:15)

The Best Odds On Betfair Exchange Handicap Steeple Chase will follow as the second race to take place on day one. Back in 2022, it was pre-race favourite Corrigeen Rock, ridden by jockey Derek Fox, who emerged as the winner after Fox had managed to fend off competition from Heartbreak Kid and Rose Sea Has.

The Betfair Winter Novices’ Hurdle Race (Friday 8th, 13:50)

Now we are at the halfway stage of the first day of this year’s Tingle Creek Festival, we now move on to the third race of Friday afternoon, which will be the Betfair Winter Novices’ Hurdle Race. Harry Cobden, onboard pre-race favourite Henri The Second, won in 2022 with Henry’s Friend and Maximilian having to settle for second and third place, respectively.

The Betfair Esher Novices’ Steeple Chase (Friday 8th, 14:25)

The third to last race of the day will be the Betfair Esher Novices’ Steeple Chase. The last time this race took place at Sandown was in 2022, with the winner being Gloire D’athon, who jockey Tom Scudamore rode. Fable and Raffle Ticket filled the other two spots in this race’s top three.

The Betfair Exchange Handicap Steeple Chase (Friday 8th, 15:00)

The Betfair Exchange Handicap Steeple Chase is set to follow as the penultimate race of the opening day of the 2023 Tingle Creek Festival at Sandown. I See You Well, ridden by jockey Paddy Barlow and trained by Seamus Mullins, was the winner of the most recent running of this race back in 2022. Step Back and Le Breuil had to settle for a second and third place finish, respectively.

The Betfair Racing…Only Bettor Podcast Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (Friday 8th, 15:35)

The sixth and final race to take place at Sandown on Day One will be the Betfair Racing…Only Bettor Podcast Novices’ Handicap Hurdle. Hugos New Horse, ridden by Harry Cobden, was the winner of this last year. This was the jockey’s second win on the opening day in 2022. Galahad Threepwood and Alioski came second and third place.

The Betfair Weighed In Podcast Claremont Novices’ Hurdle Race (Saturday 9th, 12:05)

The second and final day of the 2023 Tingle Creek Festival will open with the Betfair Weighed In Podcast Claremont Novices’ Hurdle Race. 2022’s winner was pre-race favourite Authorised Speed, ridden by Jamie Moore and trained by Gary Moore. Immortal and Godot took second and third place by the end of last year’s race. 

The Betfair Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Race (Saturday 9th, 12:40)

The race that follows the opener for the second day is set to be the Betfair Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Race. Coquelicot, ridden by Aidan Coleman, won the most recent running of this race at Sandown in 2022. Coleman was closely followed by Kielan Woods on West Balboa and Ben Bromley on Whitehotchillifili, who filled the remaining two spots in the top three.

The Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle Race (Saturday 9th, 13:15)

The third race on the final day of the Tingle Creek Festival will be the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle in 2023. Dolphin Square, ridden by David Maxwell, won in 2022, followed by Call Me Lord and Wilde About Oscar in second and third place, respectively.

The Betfair Henry VIII Novice’s Steeple Chase (Saturday 9th, 13:50)

The next race on Saturday will be the Betfair Henry VIII Novice’s Steeple Chase, which was won by Aidan Coleman and Jonbon last year. Boothill, ridden by Jonathan Burke, was the runner-up, whilst Unexpected Party came in third place in 2022.

The Best Odds On The Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle Race (Saturday 9th, 14:25)

The Best Odds On The Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle comes next, and back in 2022 it was won by Love Envoi, ridden by Jonathan Burke, who now had his second win of the final day. Burke fended off competition from Playful Saint and Homme Public, who came second and third in the race.

The Betfair Tingle Creek Chase (Saturday 9th, 15:00)

The Betfair Tingle Creek Chase is one of the most eye-catching races on the schedule, and it will be the penultimate race on the final day of the 2023 Tingle Creek Festival at Sandown. Tom Cannon led Edwardstone to victory back in 2022 after managing to fend off competition for the lead from Greaneteen and Shishkin.

The Betfair Exchange London National Handicap Steeple Chase (Saturday 9th, 15:35)

The final race to take place at the 2023 Tingle Creek Festival will be the Betfair Exchange London National Handicap Steeple Chase. Charlie Deutsch, onboard Quick Wave, who won this race in 2022, finished ahead of Planned Paradise and Éclair De Guye, who finished in second and third place, respectively.

Anticipation is building ahead of the Festival getting underway at the iconic Sandown Racecourse on Friday, 8th December.
