2026 Scottish Open: Rory McIlroy to return
Five time Major Champion Rory McIlroy has announced that he will be taking part in the upcoming and much anticipated Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in July 2026.
The much anticipated and highly prestigious annual Genesis Scottish Open will be held at the Renaissance Club once again in 2026, with the enthralling world class golf action taking place over the course of four action packed days, from Thursday 9th July to Sunday 12th July 2026. This is the second Rolex Series event on the Road to Dubai.
All eyes will be on who lifts the trophy this year, with Chris Gotterup being the reigning champion following his triumph in back in 2025. The American’s triumph was his first ever career win on the DP World Tour.
To add to the excitement and anticipation for the 2026 iteration of the Scottish Open, it has been confirmed that five time Major Champion and reigning Masters winner Rory McIlroy will be making his latest return to this tournament as he seeks to add yet another title to his ever-growing list of honours in what has been an incredibly successful career for him to date.
2025 saw him win the grand slam. He won the latest Amgen Irish Open, in addition to the aforementioned Masters, whilst he was also able to win the Players Championship in March that year, beating runner-up Shane Lowry by two strokes.
He was also part of a victorious Team Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup, beating the United States in a first away victory since 2012.
McIlroy will be looking to win the Genesis Scottish Open for what would be the second time in his illustrious career this year.
The Northern Irish golf player won it for the first time back in 2023 when he managed to fend off some stern competition from Scotland’s Robert McIntyre, who he beat by just one stroke following a superb performance that finished with a double birdie on the 17th and 18th holes. This triumph made him the first player to have ever won both the Scottish and Irish national opens.
In 2025, Rory McIlroy was once more amongst the contenders to win at the Renaissance Club, but he lost out as a runner-up alongside England’s Marco Penge, with the aforementioned Chris Gotterup coming out on top. McIlroy will be determined to go one better this year and lift this tournament’s trophy for the second time.
On his return to the Renaissance Club for the 2026 Scottish Open, Rory McIlroy said (via DP World Tour): “It’s always an honour to compete in a national open, and I’m excited to be back at the Genesis Scottish Open this summer.
“Winning in 2023 created some great memories, and I’m looking forward to building on my strong performances at The Renaissance Club.”
At the moment, Rory McIlroy is the World Number Two, with only current number one Scottie Scheffler above him in the world rankings as of the time of writing.
The player line-up for the 2026 Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club promises to be as illustrious as ever, with Rory McIlroy being the very first major name in the world of golf to have been confirmed to be taking part in this year’s tournament in July 2026.
Excitement is building ahead of the start of the 2026 edition of the iconic Genesis Scottish Open at the famous Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. Some of the best golf players on the planet, including the aforementioned Rory McIlroy, will be vying to lift one of the sport’s most iconic trophies.
